  Baghdad, May 11, (VOI) – Iraqi journalist Jamal al-Atabi said the U.S. forces released his son Furat al-Atabi, a layout designer in the Iraqi newspaper al-Sabah, on Friday after three months in detention. Several journalists in Diwaniya, south of Iraq, say they were banned from covering events in the city except through press conferences, April 12, 2007. Joint U.S.-Iraqi forces had opened fire against a reporter for Al-Sabah newspaper, while a reporter for Al-Furat TV was detained for several hours.
Peshmerga forces storm into the headquarters of Al-Fayhaa’ TV at Suleimaniya in the Kurdish autonomous region and detain its employees for 24 hours without an arrest warrant, April 23, 2007. Al-Fayhaa’ TV Director Mohammed Al-Ta’I told JFOI that ten employees were severely beaten by Peshmerga forces and that their possessions and equipment were destroyed in the raid. Kurdish security authorities denied any knowledge of the raid.
Hassan Shaheed Al-Azzawi, a reporter for Al-Sabah newspaper, is brought to court in Kut, southern Iraq, after he is detained for two days on charges of slandering the former governorate council chairman in a news story published 18 months ago, April 30, 2007. Al-Azzawi told JFOI that he wrote his story based on a press statement he obtained officially from the Wasit Governorate Council in October 2005.

Al-Iraqiya director general Habib al-Sadr told AFP last month that at least 75 members of his staff have been killed since he took over the channel in 2005 and another 68 wounded. (20 Sept. 2007). We list only about 1/3rd of this number of the Al Iraqiya staff as killed.
