in Homelessness
More than 37,000 runners will compete in Saturday's Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond, Virginia. For at least 19 participants, crossing the finish line represents something extra special. They're all homeless, in various stages of transition. Training for and finishing this 10k has been one way they've all learned to set a goal, achieve it and feel good about themselves.
in Environment
Annie Leonard has now released a new short film, "The Story of Bottled Water," illustrating how the bottled water industry has waged a war on tap and convinced us to buy their plastic bottles, even though the environmental and economic costs of bottled water are high.
in Health Care
There's reason to smile on this Monday morning. Last night, the House passed sweeping health care reform by a vote of 219-212, guaranteeing coverage to 32 million more people overnight. After a bruising and viciously partisan battle that included some of the decade's most ridiculous political maneuvers, there is a health care bill on its way to the president's desk.
in Human Rights
Today is World Water Day, and while a good many folks hear the word water and think "environment," it's becoming more imperative by the second that people start thinking "human rights” too. in Gay Rights

Applicants should command the respect and admiration of both the gay community and the mainstream American public. Job duties include being the face of the gay civil rights movement and dedicating your life to equality. Interested candidates should apply immediately
in Criminal Justice
What’s another 60,500 or so brutal sexual assaults in the larger scheme of things? That's probably not U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s point of view. But if he delays review of national standards to reduce prison rapes for another year -- which at the moment, looks quite likely -- that's effectively the message he's sending.
in Animals
Prosthetic limbs aren't just for humans anymore. From hooves to flippers to beaks, human ingenuity and compassion have given injured animals a second chance. But it doesn't come cheap, and not everyone agrees that it's worth the investment.
in Global Poverty
Happy World Water Day! Though every year, nearly 2 million children die from water-borne illnesses, the good news is that investments in sanitation and safe water are among the best you can make. The World Health Organization says every $1 spent to promote them yields a $3-34 benefit. That's something really worth celebrating -- and advocating for.
