Xander Markham's Blog

I'm a 24-year old English author, seeing out the final months of my time at university and looking forward to getting out and unleashing my books on the world. I'm working on an eight-part series of character-driven spy thrillers, the first of which was completed last year and is undergoing some surgical revision to make it just that little bit more exciting, suspenseful, sexy and explosive.

The aim is to have a website spreading the good word to all you good denizens of the 'net by the mid-point of this year, so keep an eye out and know that any support is immensely appreciated. More information will be forthcoming once my agent in the field has come in from the cold (it's chilly in England at this time of year). I've been an avid gamer since I was a wee lad, gripping a NES controller in my hands and comprehensively failing to get past those infuriating Hammer Bros on Level 8-3 of Super Mario Bros.

I've stuck with Nintendo since then (not for any animosity towards the other console makers of course - Nintendo just make games I enjoy and that I've grown up with), apart from a brief sojourn with a Sony PlayStation, several woeful attempts to play Half-Life 2 using a laptop touchpad, as well as sporadically managing to wrangle a turn on my sister's beloved Sega Saturn. In addition to burping out the occasional novel, I'm a passionate critic, writing reviews and articles of films, book and games for my school magazine and university newspaper, for which I created and edited its film section.

While primarily a film geek, the evolution of the games industry over the course of my short lifetime has fascinated me and provided vast quantities of content for some incendiary pieces of work - perhaps a few more might spring up on here? My Favourite Games of All Time (because who doesn't love having a few Of All Time lists?) are GoldenEye 007 (which I still play, along with Perfect Dark, at least once a year to remind me of its glories), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (on my American SNES, naturally), Gunstar Heroes (thank you Virtual Console for bringing this back into my drawing room!), Super Mario Bros 3 (I don't know who told Shigsy Miyamoto-san that raccoons could fly, but I'll love them forever) and No More Heroes (take your time with the sequel, Rising Star, it's not like I'm CHEWING MY OWN HANDS OFF WAITING FOR IT!). I hope you find great enjoyment in my many scribings, and please keep an eye out for upcoming news on my novel(s) and website. Good gaming, everyone!

Syfy President Dave Howe told Gamasutra that he wants to expand his channel's best shows into the gaming medium. But can so-called 'platform agnostic IPs' ever produce faithful, creatively satisfying results and what are the challenges facing them?

Game budgets are rising and blockbusters like Crysis 2 are putting all the money on-screen. But the games attracting real cult adoration are flawed gems like No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition. What is it that makes us love these games we shouldn't?

Trespasser's ideas were indeed way ...

Trespasser's ideas were indeed way ahead of its time, which was a major problem as the technology available was ridiculously insufficient to integrate them in any playable fashion. It's an honourable failure, but a failure nevertheless. As for the blog title, it accurately describes what the post is about, so ...

Well you can do all ...

Well you can do all those things with IR aiming if you want to. Let's just hope that few developers ever come to expect us to. EDIT: I just discovered that Sniper Elite is actually being ported to the Wii.

The simplest answer I can ...

The simplest answer I can give is that I've played Wii Sports for countless hours with family and friends, many of whom are usually non-gamers. When the controller doesn't respond quite as it should, such as the twitchy putting on golf, my gaming friends usually sigh and blame the imprecision. ...

This has been a wonderfully thoughtful and cohesive set of articles so far. Wind Waker is my least favourite of the recent Zeldas aka Ocarina and beyond , but your analyses have been fascinating in the thematic layers Nintendo slipped into the writing, something that gaming could do with a ...

@Matt Wilson: I agree with you that if the consequences are too severe, the player will simply reset their game even if they haven't yet died. The only way to get around that would be to have very widely spaced checkpoints so the player would rather keep going than have ...

Interesting post. By a happy ...

Interesting post. By a happy coincidence, I have a post on my blog tackling more or less the same subject. I think the problem with the disconnect between narrative and gameplay is that narrative is often treated as a concrete entity, even in the minor details, whereas it should be ...
