Protestor in Danger of Execution as Iran Flouts Human Rights Standards

(4 March 2010) An Iranian protestor, prosecuted in a post-Ashura trials on charges of Moharebeh, or “enmity against God, is in danger of imminent execution, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said today.

The identity of the protestor sentenced to death is not yet certain as the Iranian Judiciary is purposefully refusing to provide accurate information regarding ongoing prosecutions and sentencing. On 9 February 2010, the Iranian Judiciary announced that nine post-election protestors had been convicted: one sentenced to execution and the other eight protestors sentenced to prison.

The news website irangreenvoice.com reported that an appeals court has upheld a death sentence for 20-year old Iranian student Mohammad Amin Valian.

Imprisoned Student Reveals Details of Unfair Prosecution

(22 February 2010) The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has obtained a copy of a letter by an imprisoned student, sentenced to 15 years, which demonstrates the utter lack of evidence against him as well as the arbitrary nature of the show trial convicting him. The letter, by Seyed Zia Nabavi, is written to the head of Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani from inside Evin prison’s ward 350, demanding a fair appeals hearing.

“This document provides significant evidence of how Iranian Judiciary doles out lengthy and unjust prison sentences for young people, without any evidence against them,” said Hadi Ghaemi, the Campaign’s spokesperson.

Iran’s Shameful Performance Stuns the UN Human Rights Council

(17 February 2010) As the review of Iran’s human rights record under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process concluded at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Iranian government demonstrated its utter lack of respect for internationally accepted norms by simultaneously accepting and rejecting recommendations of UN members with regard to addressing the critical situation of human rights in Iran, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said today.

“This was a moment of truth, when the world could see the Iranian government’s deceitful attitude toward international human rights norms,” said Aaron Rhodes, a spokesman for the Campaign.

UN Review Affirms Need for More Pressure to Improve Human Rights

(15 February 2010) Iran’s rejectionist initial response to recommendations by members of the international community to address grave human rights abuses during the UN’s Universal Period Review clearly demonstrates the need for a special session of the Human Rights Council and a special envoy dealing with these abuses, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said today.

“The Iranian government has turned the 1979 Revolution to a revolution against the human rights of its own citizens, and an attempt to turn back progress on human rights on the global scene,” said Hadi Ghaemi, spokesperson for the Campaign.

Wife of Mehdi Karroubi Addresses Ayatollah Khamenei About The Torture of Her Son

(14 February 2010) The wife of opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi has published an open letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader detailing her son Ali Karroubi’s torture following his detention on 11 February, as the authorities stifled opposition demonstrations, and appealed for an end to such abuses.

Fatemeh Karroubi described how her son was arrested as he attempted to protect his father from violence by unidentified agents.
