CAIRO -- For Mohamed-Ali Bouharb, the soul-searching journey of hajj he plans to embark on this year will be exceptional, since the Muslim soldier will be traveling all the way to the holy sites on a special trip provided by the army of the secular European country.
"The army is always in advance of society," a jubilant Captain Bouharb told the Globe & Mail on Tuesday, September 15.
For this year's hajj, Muslims in the French army who will go on the journey to Saudi Arabia will not have to travel on private commercial flights with ordinary civilians.
In a break from tradition, the Defense Ministry will provide its Muslim soldiers a plane to fly them and organize their stay.
The new hajj journey is the first to be sponsored by the army for Muslim personnel.
Longtime before, the army has sponsored annual trips for its soldiers to Catholic shrines in Lourdes with its long history of bonds with the Catholic Church.
Soldiers and officers willing to embark on the hajj journey next November would pay about €3,000, an amount less than most private travel agencies.
On the other hand, accommodation and guide will be provided by the Saudi Defense Ministry....
While arranging a hajj trip would be unusual for any Western government, it is especially extraordinary in France, a Catholic country with a strict secular tradition....
I believe India has been doing this same asinine thing for the ungrateful and barbaric Mohammedans in India. All those haj subsidies paid for by non Muslims. On top of that the Saudi barbarians reap all the money flowing into Saudi Arabia as plane loads of Mohammedan Zombies come and worship a pedophile prophet and a blood thirsty moon god called Allah. One of biggest show of foolish sheep herd mentality in the world.

Does it not occur to any of you (including Robert) that this might be a way for the French authorites to keep an eye on these fellows while they are on hajj? Who knows who might target a travelling soldier heading to SA alone. For recruiting or for attack. It also would make it easier to note if any blipped off for their own activities off the radar.
And what Islamic country, suspending reality for a moment and supposing it had Catholic soldiers, would subsidize a trip for any of them to, say, Rome or the shrine at Lourdes or Fatima? Ah, the West is so stupid and the Islamic world is so oppressive. Reasonable minds can differ as to which in the abstract should be condemned more, stupidity or barbarism. And right now this is the stark choice civilization faces-------the idiocy of its own elites versus the all-consuming, ungracious, repressive nature of an ideology that would destroy civilization if only given the chance. Mecca my ass.
At least they're providing trips to Lourdes for Catholic soldiers. But that's in France, only a few hours away by bus or train. This is upping the ante quite a bit. They should be providing Catholic and other Christian soldiers with trips to Jerusalem during Holy Week. Likewise trips to Israel for Jewish soldiers during the Jewish holidays. And similar trips to Hindu and Buddhist shrines for soldiers from those faiths. And to be fair, they should offer subsidized vacations to all of their troops.
This would be brilliant of France if the trip was one-way.

A further thought. The French army really should read Simon Winchester's brilliant book, 'Krakatoa'. Then they might think twice about making it easier for Muslims in France, to make the hajj. Because Winchester includes in his book the observation that after the Dutch colonised Indonesia, it became much easier, quicker, cheaper and safer, thanks to the availability of more modern transportation (Dutch and other nations' sailing ships and then steamships), for many more 'village Muslims' from Indonesia to make the hajj. And a significant number of those who did, came back as born-again newly-energised sharia-pushers and jihad-plotters and Infidel-haters, and Indonesia began to Islamify more swiftly and thoroughly than it had heretofore been able.
All infidel states would be advised to make it *harder*, not easier, for Mohammedans resident within their borders to make the hajj. And one simple and money-saving way to do that, is to NOT subsidise such travel (savsiv has pointed out the expensive and indeed unconscionable folly of the hajj-subsidy provided by the Indian government).
