No Consensus on Possible Subway Stop at Wilshire & Crenshaw

crenshaw-subway-station.jpg Curbed LA attended Wednesday night's scoping meeting about adding an additional stop to plans for the Westside Subway Extension. Public comments ranged the gamut, from it's absolutely needed to hell no. Curbed's conclusion seems right on: "If we were betting bloggers, we'd have to say Metro will skip a Crenshaw staton. The ridership isn't quite there, the density can't be changed, it's cheaper to build the line without it, and you have wealthy homeowners adamantly against the stop."

We spoke with Aaron Paul ("Jesse Pinkman"), Bryan Cranston ("Walter White"), and series creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan, about the new season of "Breaking Bad" on AMC. We got to ask Aaron Paul about the challenges of working simultaneously on AMC's "Breaking Bad" and HBO's "Big Love..." more ›

The former 33-year-old mayor of La Puente, Louie Lujan, was sentenced to three months probation, fined $1,000 and barred from holding elected office, a Superior Court Judge ruled today. Last month, Lujan pleaded guilty to one felony count of perjury not reporting contributions and expenditures during his 2009 campaign before submitting his resignation. more ›

Police Recover 23 Bicycles, 16 Strollers & More in the South Bay

alleged-bicycle-theif-south-bay.jpg A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after the Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach police departments conducted a probation search at a residence in the L.A. neighborhood of Westchester, finding several stolen items. Bicycle theft was on the rise last fall in the South Bay and this was one reason why. Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thomspon, 31, who were both arrested in 2004 for stealing 50 bicycles, were apparently stealing bicycles, strollers and motorized scooters to support their drug habit by selling parts on eBay. In all, 23 bicycles and 16 high-end strollers were found. Both were charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property and identity theft.

An accused domestic terrorist today pleaded no contest to three counts of stalking and three of conspiracy to commit stalking in connection to acts against UCLA researchers and employees of POM Wonderful Juice Company, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced. Kevin Rich Olliff, 22, an associate of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) faces a three-year state prison sentence under terms of a negotiated settlement. more ›

SXSW 2010 Through Our Lens: Day One

First of all, it’s more madness this time around than I remembered. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older and lamer and my half-Irish liver can’t quite swing St. Patrick’s Day with as much gusto as it once did. Or maybe it’s because Molly and I, in an effort to bring recommendations, recap, and (SXSW) reality to those of you who couldn’t make it this year are trying to see as many bands as humanly possible each 24 hour period. more ›

This weekend has two highly anticipated premieres on Sunday night. Discovery begins airing its miniseries "Life" - an incredible and lushly filmed nature series that took more than 4 years to complete. We've seen the first several episodes and they are jaw-dropping... more ›

It's not very often that one gets to sit with a legend (ok sure, we did just get to hang out with Betty White a few weeks ago), so we were thrilled to have a chance to speak with veteran character actor Len Lesser who has been in hundreds of TV and film productions in his 60+ year career. more ›

After allegedly stabbing a man in a Lancaster movie theatre last month, leaving the victim in a coma, 39-year-old Landry Boullard was charged today with one count of attempted willful, deliberate, premeditated murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the District Attorney's Office this afternoon. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Hello, Greenberg!

For a certain sub-section of filmgoers (e.g. people who fucking rule), the arrival of a new Noah Baumbach movie is cause for celebration. By most accounts, Greenberg is as strong as The Squid and the Whale. This, folks, is a very, very good thing. I couldn't get through the book, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has me intrigued. Don't be scared off by the subtitles, people! I'm sort of tired of Kristen Stewart so The Runaways is low on my list. Plus, Dakota Fanning is just terrible, right? Pass. I typically hate movies with and about kids, but Diary of a Wimpy Kid has Chloe Moretz (who should kick-ass in Kick-Ass). Consider it a maybe. more ›

Money Funneled to Roads Instead of Vegas to Anaheim Train

maglev-funding-vegas-anaheim.jpg The dream of developing a MagLev train between Las Vegas and Anaheim took a hit this week when Nevada transportation officials designated $45 million to an airport road connector instead. "[It] will have the biggest immediate impact for job creation and relief from traffic congestion,” said Senator Harry Reid in a statement printed in the Las Vegas Sun, via Curbed LA. The California-Nevada Super Speed Train commission is nonplussed, but will seek funding elsewhere.

Day two began right with pizza for breakfast at Homeslice Pizza and rock 'n' roll from North Carolina. Outside on the gravel patio they had set up a small stage where families were able to groove to The Love Language's set while enjoying their gooey cheese and sauce. Despite the rickety sound system, The Love Language sounded sharp. They've had a very good year. After self-releasing their critically acclaimed self titled album, The Love Language signed to Merge Records and have begun work recording their new album. We were curious to see if the new material they have been working on was worthy of their first album and are happy to report that...yes, yes it is. more ›

Site of Venice West Cafe Now a City Landmark

venice-west-cafe.jpg It was a Beat Generation hangout, with the likes of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg hanging out there. Today, the old Venice West Cafe--it closed in 1966--is home to Piccolo, an upscale restaurant and now is the site of a city landmark, says the LA Times. The building itself isn't anything to write home about, but city planners said the location had "social and cultural significance." So next time you're walking by 5 Dudley Avenue, right off the Venice Boardwalk, know that it's more than just that.
