Work and Wonder Behind Fashion Week

Fashion Week is many things -- crazy, hilarious, stressful, self-referential and most of all, great fun.

Weeks of work by legions of people finally culminate in a rapid-fire whirl of shows all around the island of Manhattan, a herd of well-dressed (or at least interestingly dressed) folks chasing after them.

Sometimes they get a chance to sit near or chat with celebrity. Sometimes they get to see a melt-down. Sometimes they get to see a great show. Sometimes they get a dud. And sometimes, when it all comes together, they get to taste a little magic.

Photographer Elizabeth Lippman is capturing some of the excitement of New York's Spring 2010 Fashion Week for StyleList, examining both the precision and the madness of backstage preparation as well as the glitter and the glamour out front.

Bowties Have Celebrity Women All Tied Up - Knotty by Nature

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

We've grown accustomed to Chuck Bass and his dandy array of bowties. But at the end of the day, we want to date him, not dress like him.

Try telling that to these starlets and, yes, even spouses of heads of state. From Colonel Sanders ribbon ties to blousy numbers seemingly swiped from Elaine Stritch's closet, these gals have jumped on the neckwear bandwagon and buckled themselves in.

We're on the fence when it comes to this trend, but we'll let you be the judge.

Click here to see Jennifer Aniston rock a tie ... and nothing else.

Bowtie Babes Get Knotty

We know a socialite like "The City" star Olivia Palermo, shown here at a Diesel party in August, has got to have money ... so why is she dressing like Raggedy Andy? We can only imagine the eye-bulging, jaw-dropping faces co-star Whitney Port made when she saw this get-up.

Seeing Kirsten Dunst at the Opening Ceremony Tokyo launch party in August, we don't know if we should hand her a broom or ask for a drumstick. The dress is totally French maid, but that skinny black tie is pure Colonel Sanders.

Part Marlene Dietrich, part Chippendale's dancer, Diane Kruger's sleeveless penguin suit for the Melbourne premiere of "Inglourious Basterds" last month boasted a studded black bowtie and suspenders.

You dropped the Bond on me, buh-baby. While everyone else swanned around in ballgowns, envelope-pusher Rihanna went the 007 route in a tux for May's "The Model as Muse" Costume Institute Gala at the Met. Dare we say we have a girl crush?

Et tu, Michelle? The First Lady tied one on for an awards ceremony for the International Women of Courage in March.

We thought marrying Tom Green was questionable, but the striped bow tie Drew Barrymore wore last month brings lapses in judgment to a whole 'nother level. And can we talk about that old man pajama top?

Michelle Obama isn't the only First Lady with a knot-ty side. At the NATO Summit in April, French First Lady Carla Bruni opted for a gray coat with a chunky tie detail.

Chris March, that big, lovable teddy bear known for his fantastic designs -- and ability to sleep through any challenge -- is hard at work after making a name for himself on "Project Runway."

"I am filming a pilot about me and my crazy workshop at the end of this month," he tells StyleList. "Kind of like 'Ace of Cakes,' only in the fashion/costume world."

Also on his plate: "I Heart Chris March," which is, in his words, a "coffee table book of photography of my costume and fashion designs from the last 25 years," he says. Full of gorgeous, colorful spreads; it's available for pre-order now for $42 at ChrisMarchDesign.com (ships mid-November).

After launching her exotic-skin handbag collection in fall 2007, it only took Colombian-born Adriana Castro two years to be recognized by GenArt with the Fresh Faces in Fashion Award for Accessory Design, covered in elite publications like Women's Wear Daily and Vogue, and worn by fashion influencers including Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and the Kardashian sisters.

For Spring 2010, the 26-year-old Castro continues to use her trademark crocodile and python skins – sourced from her family farm in Columbia a.k.a. zoocriadero – in bold shades of orange, aquamarine, fuchsia, electric purple and turquoise.

"I feel that the turquoise family and the soft purple colors are the key bold shades for the season, but we're still not forgetting our classic neutrals. Subdues metallics, especially in clutches, is also key," Castro said.

New York Fashion Week for Spring 2010 is in full force! It's only day three, but it's never too soon to start rooting out the beauty trends that we'll all love come springtime.

Gwen Stefani chose solid white nail polish for the models at her L.A.M.B. collection, which is a tough color (or non-color) to wear, but is a fun idea for spring since we'll all be tired of dark, vampy purples by then.

The color is called NYC Fleet Week by Dashing Diva and it's available now (for only $8!) if you want to be way ahead of the trends.

Be sure to check out StyleList's ongoing coverage of New York Fashion Week for the latest in beauty looks, celeb sightings and of course, the clothes!

We have a verdict folks: photog to the stars Annie Leibovitz will get to keep the copyrights to her work.

After we updated yesterday that the pending lawsuit over Leibovtiz's $24 million loan from Art Capital Group was at a stalemate, WWD reported that the photographer has extended the conditions on loan repayment to the lender.

Lucky for Leibovitz, this also means that Art Capital will withdraw the lawsuit they filed against her in July.

New Balance is suing LVMH for trademark infringement, alleging that the luxury company copied one of its most popular shoe designs.

New Balance claims Louis Vuitton's Minstrel sneaker is a copy of its men's top-selling 574 retro-style running shoe, according to a story in The Boston Herald.

The 574, on store shelves since the mid-'90s, retails for around $75. Louis Vuitton's Minstrel, which premiered last month, is $590.

Cavemen Wore Colorful Clothing? Yabba Dabba Do Duds

Geico Caveman Fashion

PETA might not win over the fur-loving stylephiles they're protesting over at New York Fashion Week, but at least they've got the caveman caucus on their side. Maybe.

Pink, turquoise and black clothing fibers found by archaeologists in the Republic of Georgia suggest that Stone Agers wore colorful clothing, not animal furs and pelts as previously thought, The Daily Mail reports.

In other words, they might have looked less like Fred Flintstone and more like ... er, Paris Hilton. (Who else wears pink and turquoise?)

Looks like the "Sex and the City" gals aren't the only ones living in the Eighties.

Count Drew Barrymore in. The quirky starlet promoted her directorial debut, the roller derby film "Whip It," in Boston yesterday with a black dip-dyed 'do that's a dead-ringer for the legendary chocolate-blonde swirl locks of Terri Nunn, lead singer for Eighties pop band Berlin.

Well, Drew, you certainly take our breath away.

Should I Wear This? Jeggings

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Jeans

As a mother of two who is far from a sample size and living in a non-fashion capitol, many trends touted by the Vogues, Glamours and W's of the world – not to mention seen on designer runways – might not actually be meant for me.

It's time to put the trends to the test.

The Trend: Jeggings (As in, "Jeans" + "Leggings," in case you haven't heard the term yet.)

Beyoncé
wears them with sky-high stilettos and a blazer. Sienna Miller, Rihanna, Paris Hilton and Whitney Port like them (shudder) stonewashed. Gwen Stefani and Lily Allen opt for simple, dark washes. Ciara will take them tie-dyed, thank you very much.

Then there are the runways: Twenty8Twelve, Rock & Republic, Hussein Chalayan, Rag & Bone, William Rast and Gucci – to name a few -- painted them on models for their Fall '09 fashion shows.

And, now, every brand – from Topshop and bebe to James Jeans and Hudson – seems to have its own version of the jegging.
