Professor Maldonado is Professor (by courtesy) of Law and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical School.

Dr. José Maldonado received his bachelor's degree in biology and education at Catholic University of Puerto Rico, his medical degree at Ponce School of Medicine and his psychiatric training at Temple University, in Philadelphia. He completed additional training in Forensic Psychiatry at Temple University, and completed a fellowship in Conultation-Liaison/Neuropsychiatry at New England Medical Center/Tufts University, in Boston.

Dr. Maldonado is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. There he serves as Chief of the Medical and Forensic Psychiatry Section, Director of the Medical Psychotherapy Clinic, and Medical Director of the Consultation/Liaison Service. Dr. Maldonado is also the psychiatric consultant to all six tranplant teams (i.e., heart, lung, liver, kidney, small bowel, and bone marrow) and co-chair of the ethics committee at Stanford University Medical Center. He has special expertise in the areas of neuropsychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and somatoform disorders, psycho-immunology, dissociation, hypnosis, psychosocial aspects of organ transplantation, cross-cultural psychiatry and cross-cultural aspects of health care.

Dr. Maldonado's research interest include: Management of Delirium, Confusional States and other acute organic brain syndromes; Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of Traumatic Brain Injury; Factitious Disorder & Munchausen's Syndrome; Cultural Diversity in Medical Care; Psychiatric Complications of Solid Organ and Bone Marrow Transplantation; Effects of Residency Training in the Life of a Doctor; Conversion Disorder; Depression in the Medically Ill; Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of Medical Illness and its Treatment; Application of Hypnosis in Psychiatry and Medicine; and Diagnosis and Treatment of Dissociative Disorders.

Dr. Maldonado received the Charles Shagass, MD Award, for meritorious scholarly work during residency training. He is a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Psychiatry and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. In addition, The Psychiatric Times named Dr. Maldonado 2001 Teacher of the Year. In June 2003, Dr. Maldonado was awarded the Henry J. Kaiser Award at the Stanford University Scool of Medicine Commencement Ceremony for excellence in clinical teaching. In August 2003, Dr. Maldonado received the "Best Researcher/Author Presentation" award at the World Congress in Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Maldonado enjoys national and international recognition as an expert in the treatment of delirium and confusional states, traumatic brain injury, conversion disorder, and hypnosis.

Dr. Maldonado has over 50 publications to his name. Most recently he authored chapters in the APA Textbook of Psychiatry (APPI, 2002) and Psychiatry (Tasman, Kay & Lieberman, Wiley, 2003) on Dissociative Disorders and Hypnosis, and recently published an article on Conversion Disorder in the APA 2001 Reviews in Psychiatry, and papers on Factitious Disorders (2002) and Munchausen's-by-Proxy (2003) in the Journal of the American College of Forensic Psychiatry. He is curently working on a book in medical psychiatry, with particular interest in delirium and traumatic brain injury to be published next year and a book on medical hypnosis to be published in the Winter of 2004.
