Matthew Sanders is a Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law in the Environmental Law Clinic. In that capacity he trains second- and third-year law students in the practice of environmental law, including advising clients, addressing government agencies, and litigating cases in federal and state court.

Matthew brings diverse experience to the Clinic. From 2011 to 2013, he clerked for Judge Consuelo M. Callahan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. From 2007 to 2011, he was an attorney at Paul Hastings LLP in San Francisco, where he represented clients in a wide variety of environmental counseling, compliance, and litigation matters, with a focus on renewable energy and natural resources. From 2002 to 2007, he was an appellate attorney in the Environment & Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where he represented federal agencies in environmental cases in the federal courts of appeals, especially the Ninth Circuit. He also taught legal writing at American University’s Washington College of Law between 2006 and 2007.

Matthew received his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 2002, where he was co-editor-in-chief of the Stanford Environmental Law Journal and was awarded the Hilmer Oehlmann, Jr. Prize for excellence in legal research and writing. He received his B.A. from Carleton College in 1997, magna cum laude, in history with a minor in environmental science.
