Federal Sequestration and Financial Aid at Stanford

June 5, 2013

Under the terms of the Budget Control Act of 2011, the federal government imposed across-the-board budget cuts that became effective on March 1, 2013. These sequestration cuts affect higher education programs, including some types of federal student aid. Here is a summary of the impact of sequestration cuts on federal student aid programs that are used by Stanford students:

  • Direct Loans (Subsidized/Unsubsidized): The origination fee has increased slightly to 1.051%.
  • Direct PLUS Loans: The origination fee has increased slightly to 4.204%.
  • Federal Work-Study: No changes for undergraduates. The number of FWS positions for graduate students is decreasing for the 2013-2014 academic year.
  • Perkins Loans: No changes.
  • Pell Grants: No changes.
  • SEOG Grants: No changes.
  • TEACH Grants: New awards disbursed after March 1 must be reduced by 6.0% from the award amount for which the student otherwise would have been eligible.

Please be assured that Stanford is not changing our commitment to meet the demonstrated financial need of our undergraduates. More information about the impact of sequestration can be found on the website of Federal Student Aid.
