The Position

Special Events Patrol officers (SEPs and SSEPs) are non-sworn security personnel who work part-time at Stanford University. SSEPs are student employees who work many of the same details as non-student SEPs, but may also be tasked with special projects within the Department of Public Safety.

Special Event Patrol officers (SEP) support the overall public safety mission of the Stanford Department of Public Safety by performing a variety of functions on a casual, part-time basis. Specific duties include but are not limited to: providing security, crowd management, and traffic control services during special events and emergencies including standing a security post in a potentially dangerous location; patrolling designated areas of the University by foot, motor vehicle or other DOT approved method of transportation for suspicious and/or illegal behavior, safety hazards, unlocked doors, opportunities to assist the public, etc.; providing directions and assistance to community members and visitors; posting no-parking signs, deploying cones, flares, setting up and moving barricades and other traffic control equipment; providing traffic and pedestrian control; and enforcing violations of the University’s Parking Code.

The ideal candidate must be physically fit and able to adapt physically and psychologically to frequently changing needs and priorities. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio even during stressful situations, the ability to problem solve, a high level of energy, enthusiasm and flexibility are key characteristics of the successful incumbent.

The SEP is a non-sworn, unarmed position. SEPs wear a uniform and a duty belt with limited gear. Assignments vary and are available on all shifts (days, evenings, weekend, including Holidays). Outdoor work is required at all times of the year. SEPs are casual employees working on-call at less than 50% FTE. The position can require moderate to strenuous activity.

Position Requirements and Hiring Procedure

  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and apply a variety of University and departmental policies.

  • Ability to use and/or learn to use two-way radio for communication even during stressful conditions.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Familiarity and/or ability to learn the Stanford Campus.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting or standing for extended periods of time, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, and operating assigned office equipment.
  • Ability to push, pull and move 75 pounds; ability to repeatedly lift 25 lbs to a height of 18-24 inches.
  • Must provide written verification from a physician that you can perform the duties of the position as outlined in the detailed job description.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum education required: High School diploma or GED.
  • Must complete and return a detailed background application packet that is subject to verification
  • If application review is successful, candidate will be required to take a Live Scan fingerprint test
  • If Live Scan results are satisfactory, candidate must attend a 4 hour training/orientation session prior to first work assignment

Wages & Work Hours

  • Current Hourly Pay for SEPs ranges between $15.05-$16.00/hour
  • Some specialized positions offer a premium in addition to the regular pay rate
  • Flexible schedules: day, evenings, overnight, weekends and mid-week assignments: no mandatory assignments
