English Classes @ the I-Center

SUMMER QUARTER 2015

For Intermediate & Advanced Students


CLASSES BEGIN: Monday, June 22nd and end Thursday, August 13th,  except as noted below.

 

All classes meet in the English Classroom at Bechtel I-Center unless otherwise noted*.


  • No Beginners, please. Classes are open to Stanford students, post-doctoral scholars, and their family members.
  • Classes are informal. Please arrange childcare for babies.
  • To attend, simply go to a class at the indicated starting time.   PLEASE BE ON TIME.
  • There is no tuition charge. Students may take more than one class.
  • Questions about the classes below may be referred to Mary Ann Saunders at 650-854-2840.

  • Beginning students should contact Adult Education programs. Classes are free of charge. For Adult Education information, call 329-3752 in Palo Alto ; in Menlo Park, Redwood City or Atherton, call Sequoia Adult Ed at 306-8866; in Mountain View, call 940-1333.

MONDAYS:

I. CALIFORNIA TRAVEL AND HISTORYFind out about the places to visit for a weekend getaway or a great vacation as well as learn about the history of the location.

TUESDAYS:

II. SANDWICHES AND MEXICAN FOOD : INGREDIENTS, CONSTRUCTION & ORDERINGLearn about two essential California foods – sandwiches and Mexican food. We will learn about ingredients, construction and ordering in class with real food, so come to class hungry!  There will be two field trips to order and eat at real restaurants. $5 lunch fee payable in most classes.  Restaurant meals from $5-12. The field trips will last until about 1:30pm.

III. TALK ABOUT AMERICAN BUSINESS– Learn and apply business terms and principles in this interactive class.  No business experience necessary.

WEDNESDAYS:

IV.  SPEAK, YOU SPEAK, WE ALL SPEAK AMERICAN ENGLISH- CLASS 1 –Here is a unique opportunity for students to improve their pronunciation and speaking skills in this class that will be planned by the students and teacher to cover the particular problem areas of the students in the class.

V. I  SPEAK, YOU SPEAK, WE ALL SPEAK AMERICAN ENGLISH- CLASS 2  – Same class as above.

THURSDAYS:

VI.  INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN CULTURE–Examine elements of American culture, including business, education, government, family and religion.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM   – MARY PAT GASPICH- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM

 

VII.  CURRENT TOPICS IN AMERICAN CULTURE–Topical issues are read, analyzed and discussed in class.  Students are welcome to bring articles of their interest to share in class.

****No class on June 25th. Course starts on July 2nd
