Today, biomedical engineering is becoming more and more of global discipline, and the Whitaker International Fellows Program provides the opportunity for young biomedical engineers to study or conduct research overseas.

The Awards

The Whitaker International Fellows Program award is tenable for up one year and provides the following:

Round trip international airfare
A monthly living stipend
Health & Accident insurance

The Whitaker Summer Grant Program provides U.S. bioengineers and biomedical engineers funding to pursue a summer (8 weeks from June to August) of high-quality research, internship in an industry setting or coursework relevant to field of focus in an international setting. Participants are responsible for their own individually-arranged placements in university labs or other appropriate sites under supervision of a mentor.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Whitaker Fellows program, applicants must:

Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) by the start of the grant period
Have NOT received a doctorate by the grant start date
Have U.S. citizenship, or are a permanent legal resident of the US
Have language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure
Are currently enrolled or have obtained your most recent degree within three years of your proposed start date
Have received a nomination letter from the dean of a school or chair of the biomedical engineering department at the institution you are attending, or have most recently attended.

The Application

A complete applications consists of:

Biographical Information Sheet
One-page essay explaining motivation and personal experience
Two-page essay describing previous scientific research activities
Two-page essay describing proposed plan of study and/or research
One-page essay explaining plans upon returning to the U.S. relevant to future in biomedical engineering
Three letters of reference
Foreign language report
Letter of Support from an in-country host institution
Letter of nomination from home institution
