Fall on the Farm

Fall is definitely in the air. You can see it in the changing leaves along Campus Drive and feel it in the crisp morning air. So dust off your scarves and jackets, and get ready to enjoy the many seasonal festivities taking place at Stanford.

Gardeners and others with a “green thumb” are invited to attend the BeWell Community Gardens Harvest Festival on October 7. You can exchange your homegrown fruits and veggies with other gardeners, and attend a mini-gardening workshop or a cooking demonstration.

It’s also a time to celebrate the day Leland and Jane Stanford opened Stanford University in October of 1891. The annual Founders' Celebration takes place on October 25, but the university's 125th anniversary kicks off on October 18 with the Thinking Big About Learning symposium.

Then there’s the Homecoming weekend tradition that brings with it the once-a-year opportunity to visit the Stanford Mausoleum tombs where Leland Stanford and his family are buried. While many will pause to pay their respects on October 25, the sacred grounds have also been the site of many student led Halloween haunts over the years.

Come dressed up for the annual Halloween concert in the Dinkelspiel Auditorium, and the  winner with the best costume gets the thrilling chance to conduct the orchestra.

This is also the time of year when crafty employees come together in the School of Medicine. Last year, Sarina Tom, Student Life Manager, hosted a Dia de los Muertos ornament-making session. This year, she will organize another group of crafters and make spooky skull salt and pepper shakers.

Other departments, such as University Human Resources, have already started to deck the hallways with orange garlands and other fall décor. Each year they hold a joint Halloween party with Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) and the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR).
