PhD Minor

Overview

Sociology offers a minor for current doctoral students in other Stanford departments and schools.

Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 30 graduate-level units with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) or better. All 30 units for the minor are to be in courses taught by Sociology faculty. Students must enroll in the SOC course offerings (not cross-listed sections). There is one exception: 5 units may be taken in a statistics or methods course taught in another department. All units must be taken for a letter grade. Workshop, research, directed reading, or independent study units do not count towards the Ph.D. minor. The program must be approved by a Sociology adviser and filed with the Sociology student services office. While there is not a formal application process, candidates must submit a short statement of purpose (2 pages), and a completed Application for Ph.D. Minor form to the Sociology student services office. The Application for Ph.D. Minor form must have all Sociology or other courses to be applied to the minor listed, including course number, units, and final grades.
