The FY16 JPC-1/MSIS Medical Decision Aids - Predictive Markers (SimMarkers) is seeking research that improves healthcare professionals’ cognitive and performance skill acquisition or minimizes his/her skill decay. This research is seeking objective markers that could be inserted into a predictive model (one that has not been currently developed) to accurately and appropriately assess a healthcare professional’s cognitive and performance status. These cognitive and performance-type markers must be evidence-based and need to align with the respective credentialing or certifying healthcare organization. These cognitive and performance-type markers must also align with regional, local, and organization-specific recommendations, guidelines, and standards, especially if they exceed the credentialing or certifying healthcare organization-specific recommendations, guidelines, and standards.

Proposed research should investigate leading edge approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, technologies, or systems at the intersection of biology with engineering and the physical and computer sciences.
Areas of interest: please see pages 5-6 in the guidelines. Examples include: developing radical new techniques and technologies to optimally restore and maintain the health and abilities of military service members; developing new tools and techniques for forward engineering of biological systems (cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and complex communities) to be develop new products and functional systems as as well as to gain new insights into underlying mechanisms; leveraging new computational techniques from computer science, big data, and biology to enable investigation and generation of knowledge from biological data at scale, etc..

Focused Program Award

Maximum of $10 million total costs (includes direct and indirect costs) for up to 5 years
Eligibility: Full Professors with PI eligibility
Purpose: Focused Program Award applications must describe a unifying, overarching challenge that will be addressed by a set of research projects.
Applications shall include multiple, distinct research projects led by individual project leaders that address complementary aspects of the overarching challenge. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a minimum of four research projects; additional studies are allowed.
