The National Center for Biocomputation was founded in 1998 as a joint collaboration between the NASA Ames Research Center and the Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery.

The mission of the Center is to lead a national effort in applying 3D imaging and visualization technologies for biomedical and educational purposes and to support the NASA mission for the human exploration and development of space. The responsibilities of the center are to conduct fundamental research and technology development in 3D imaging, visualization, and simulation; program planning and development; and education and outreach.
