Research efforts focus on cyanobacteria, an ancient and environmentally relevant phylum of photosynthetic microorganisms. Currently, we are examining the genomic diversity of phototrophic microbial communities in extreme environments and their responses to stressors and phages. In parallel, we are developing bioinformatic and genetic tools for cyanobacteria. Another emphasis is dissecting the biochemical networks and modeling the complex signaling that govern social behavior such as phototaxis in microbes.
