Stanford University Main Campus

The main facilities and personnel of the Department of Biology are housed in the Gilbert Building, Herrin Laboratories, and Herrin Hall on the Stanford Campus. Biological Sciences is part of a science cluster on the campus, and is near the Medical School, and the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and Electrical Engineering. A free shuttle provides easy transportation around the large campus.

Carnegie Institution

The Carnegie Department of Plant Biology engages in basic research on the mechanisms involved in the growth and development of plants and algae. The Department of Plant Biology is co-located with the Carnegie Department of Global Ecology on a seven-acre site on the campus of Stanford University. Many of the Carnegie staff scientists also have academic appointments at Stanford University and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses. Carnegie staff members also act as thesis advisors to Stanford graduate students who pursue thesis research in the Carnegie laboratories.

Hopkins Marine Station

Hopkins Marine Station is a marine biology research and educational facility that operates as a branch of Stanford University's Department of Biological Sciences. Founded in 1892, Hopkins was the first marine laboratory to be established on the American Pacific coast. Since that time, many notable scientists, as well as a continuous population of undergraduate and graduate students have come to the Station to study and work towards a better understanding of the marine world. The Station is located in Pacific Grove, on the Monterey Peninsula, which forms the Southern shore of Monterey Bay.

Quantitative Biology Website

Here you will find information pertaining to Stanford biology labs with diverse research interests whose common thread is a quantitative approach toward biological questions.  From the single molecule level up to an entire ecosystem, our research methods are grounded in the physical and mathematical sciences to understand the world around us.

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve

For more than a century, scientists from academic institutions and resource management agencies around the world have conducted a wide range of research at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, producing hundreds of academic publications and receiving more than 150 advanced degrees for work based on the site.

Falconer Library

The Falconer Library is located close to the Gilbert Building on Stanford Campus. Falconer Biology Library offers broad coverage of the life sciences. Areas of particular strength are biochemistry, biophysics, cell and developmental biology, genetics and molecular biology, neurobiology, and population biology. The collection contains over 100,000 volumes, including approximately 1,200 active serial titles. Major reference tools available in the library include BIOSIS Previews, MEDLINE, SciSearch, and AGRICOLA.
