The Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) provides a number of internship and fellowship opportunities for students and professionals interested in research and/or practitioner programs that focus on democracy, development and the rule of law. Below are the current opportunities available at CDDRL.
Dachs Undergraduate Research Internship
The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies provides undergraduate field research internships through the Dachs Fund for Undergraduate Research. Interns travel to Guatemala to examine issues of maternal and children's health and the impact of local governance on health outcomes. The internship is supported by CDDRL's Program on Poverty and Governance and Professor Beatriz Magaloni who serves as a faculty mentor.
The Program on Human Rights together with the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society offer up to three summer fellowships in human rights to talented Stanford undergraduates interested in working for organizations, government agencies, NGOs or international organizations that promote or defend human rights.
Taiwan Democracy Project Internship
The Taiwan Democracy Project Internship Program provides one Stanford undergraduate with funding up to $7,500 for an unpaid summer policy or research internship in Taiwan. All Stanford undergraduate students in any course of study who have independently arranged a summer internship in Taiwan are eligible to apply. The successful applicant will spend a summer in Taiwan at a government agency, NGO, academic research center, or other organization whose work relates to some aspect of democracy as it is practiced in Taiwan.
Undergraduate Senior Honors Program
The CDDRL Undergraduate Senior Honors Program welcomes students from diverse majors across the university to write original theses on topics related to democracy, development, good governance, and the rule of law.
Pre and Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program
The CDDRL Pre and Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program welcomes exceptional Ph.D. students and new Ph.D. scholars to spend the year in residency at Stanford to conduct their own research, participate in seminars and contribute to the intellectual life of the center.
Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program
The Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program provides a unique three-week training program on the Stanford campus for practitioners from the developing world to connect, exchange experiences and receive academic training to enrich their knowledge and advance their work. The program has an active alumni network of over 230 members from over 60 developing and aspiring democracies worldwide and provides a unique set of activities and offerings to the alumni community.
Program on Social Entrepreneurship
The Program on Social Entrepreneurship integrates the on-the-ground experience of social entrepreneurs from around the world with cutting-edge academic research at Stanford University. The 10-week fellowship program brings social entrepreneurs inside the classroom through hands-on learning experiences and allows them a reprieve from the demands of their work as social change leaders.
CDDRL engages with a number of undergraduate student organizations who are exploring themes and regional issues aligned with the Center's own research agenda. In this capacity, CDDRL serves as a resource for strategic mentorship, event co-sponsorship, and general guidance for students interested in international affairs.
