23rd Annual Pediatric Update

Pre-Conference: Everything You Wanted to Know about Integrative Medicine in Pediatrics

A Continuing Medical Education Activity

Presented by the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford

Sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine

Statement of Need

The Pre-Conference will focus on gaps in medical knowledge related to integrative medicine. This course will present plenary sessions to provide the learner with strategies to implement or refer to integrative therapies to treat children and adolescents with ADHD, stress, asthma, chronic abdominal pain, pain management through acupuncture, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and will include the effects of the environment on children’s health.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for pediatricians, family physicians, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and interested allied health professionals who provide care for children and adolescents.

Course Objectives

  • Review the various types of integrative medicine and determine their appropriateness in practice
  • Counsel patients and parents on the benefits of various IM modalities, including guided imagery, therapeutic touch, acupuncture and mind-body therapies
  • Assess the risks and benefits of integrative therapies to treat or refer pediatric patients with ADHD, asthma, and JRA
  • Utilize stress reduction techniques together with conventional therapies to treat pediatric patients with chronic abdominal pain
  • Determine when and for what conditions to refer patients to IM providers
  • Develop a strategy to assess toxic environmental factors that could be causing or exacerbating diseases in children

Statement of Need

The ever-increasing amount of new biomedical information requires pediatric primary care practitioners to obtain comprehensive, up-to-date information on a wide range of clinical issues encountered in daily practice. The 23rd Annual Pediatric Update will highlight recent advances in pediatrics in addition to presenting practical information on the topics of nicotine addiction, risk taking behaviors, updated guidelines on vaccinations, management of cryptorchidism, clinical recommendations for optimizing bone health, management of nutrition in Crohn’s disease, pediatric sleep apnea and teenage acne and other important topics relevant to pediatrics.

Lectures with question and answer sessions and concurrent seminar sessions will afford participants the opportunity to discuss practice dilemmas with the expert faculty and colleagues.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and interested allied health professionals who provide care for children and adolescents.

Course Objectives

  • Screen, diagnose and manage adolescent patients presenting with acne, female pelvic pain and nicotine addiction and other risk taking behaviors
  • Integrate current clinical guidelines and recommendations on vaccinations, cryptorchidism and optimizing bone health into pediatric practice
  • Diagnose and employ best evidence in the treatment of children and adolescents with sleep apnea, Crohn’s disease and PANS
