SLAC’s Photon Science Directorate encompasses a wide-ranging set of scientific programs in chemical, materials and energy sciences, including work at three joint SLAC/Stanford research centers. Many of these programs use our X-ray light sources as a valuable research tool.
SIMES - Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences
SIMES studies the nature, properties, and synthesis of complex and novel materials. We seek to understand the relationship between the electronic and atomic structure, collective behavior and dynamics of materials and their interfaces. We use that knowledge to create clean, renewable energy technologies.

SUNCAT Center for Interface Science and Catalysis
Scientists use theoretical and experimental methods to guide the atomic-scale design of catalysts, which promote chemical reactions. Used in industry, catalysts are critical to present and future energy technologies such as artificial photosynthesis, cleaner fuels and more efficient chemical processes.

PULSE - Stanford PULSE Institute
Research at the Stanford PULSE Institute probes the structure and electronic properties of matter on the smallest and fastest scales. The goal is a deeper understanding of ultrafast phenomena in atomic physics, chemistry, materials science and structural biology.
