Happy Anniversary Branner Library!

This celebration is the culminating event in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections and Stanford's second president John Casper Branner. Please join us for a public event with speakers, food, and a tour of the library.

4:00 pm Opening Reception – Hartley Conference Center, Mitchell Earth Sciences Building

In addition, each week between now and the anniversary, we'll be exhibiting items from our collection. You can see these items on display in the Branner Library exhibit case on the 2nd floor of the Mitchell Earth Sciences Building.

The William Smith Map at Stanford 
Tuesday, March 31, 4 – 7pm 
Hartley Conference Center
View the extremely large, original 1815 map and accompanying memoir and learn about how Stanford Libraries digitized it and hear from Prof. Gail Mahood and GES students talk about its significance and its influence on geologic mapping. Refreshments provided.

Data Day
Monday, April 13, 8 am – 2pm 
Li Ka Shing Conference Center
The focus of this event will be around data publishing, data sharing, reproducibility, metadata, and data reuse. Note: Data Day is fully capped.

'Game of Thrones' Geology

Miles Traer will lecture on his fantasy Game of Thrones geologic map and theories on topics such as when and how the Red Mountains formed and how the splitting of Westeros from Essos occurred.

About John Casper Branner:

John Casper Branner (July 4, 1890 – March 1, 1922) was Stanford University’s first professor, Chair of the Department of Geology, and the University’s second president. On June 14, 1915 the University purchased Branner’s private book collection of 5,000 volumes for $23,000 making it the foundation of the Branner Earth Sciences Library.
