Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-rays such as CT and fluoroscopy, and ultrasound, usually in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease non-surgically. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologist's pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine.

Expertise in Endovascular Treatments and Image-Guided Procedures
Our division is renowned for its long history of outstanding patient care, education and research. Many endovascular treatments were pioneered at Stanford including thrombolysis for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and stent-graft repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms.
Our group offers the entire range of vascular and nonvascular image-guided procedures. We are experts in the endovascular treatment of arterial disease from angioplasty and stenting of occluded blood vessels to endograft repair of aneurysms. For venous diseases, we offer state-of-the-art therapy for DVT, varicose veins, and chronic venous occlusion. In the realm of oncology, we specialize in image-guided tumor treatments including chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, NanoKnife ablation, and radioembolization. In women's health, we offer a variety of services to alleviate pelvic pain including uterine artery embolization for the treatment of symptomatic fibroids and gonadal vein embolization for pelvic congestion syndrome.
Our advantage, as interventional radiologists, is the ability to use advanced imaging modalities including digital subtraction fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound to provide the latest endovascular therapies. As pioneers of minimally invasive surgery, we use our techniques to eliminate the need for open surgery and allow shorter recovery times.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
For Patients
Some patient types may self-refer for consultation appointments. Please call us if you're unsure if a doctor referral is required.
If you need to reschedule your appointment, please call us at least 24 hours prior to your visit.
PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Once you are scheduled you will be emailed or mailed a confirmation package that includes the time and location of your appointment, maps, a medical history form, and any patient education pertinent to your visit.
- If you are self-referred, please complete and bring the Basic Self-Referral Form, IVC Filter Self-Referral Form, DVT/Leg Swelling Self-Referral Form, whichever is applicable.
- Bring your insurance card
- Bring contact information for your referring doctor, primary care doctor, and any other doctors you would like us to stay in contact with regarding you care.
- For imaging studies (CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET scan) done at another facility, please have available what imaging study was done, where, and their contact information. We will instruct you or the facility on how to send us the images (usually a CD) and the radiologist's report. It is important that we get the images in advance.
- For lab tests done at another hospital, please ask them to fax us a copy of the results.
- If you have been asked to watch a video, it is very important that you watch this before your appointment.
- Plan to be at the clinic for 60-90 minutes.

SCHEDULING YOUR PATIENT
An initial consultation typically takes 60–90 minutes. If your office is scheduling multiple appointments for the same day, please allow enough time between appointments, so that we can provide the best care possible.
For all in-patient referrals:

Requested images and lab tests
Labs
- Routine before a procedure: CBC, chemistries as appropriate by disease state, PT/PTT/INR, pregnancy in women of child-bearing age
- Routine before outpatient consultation: CBC, chemistries as appropriate by disease state
- Oncology patients: appropriate tumor markers. For patients with primary or metastatic liver carcinomas a complete liver panel is helpful
- Patients with peripheral arterial disease, renovascular hypertension, carotid artery disease: Complete lipid profile
- Patients with DVT: work-up for coagulation disorders
Imaging
- Primary or secondary liver tumors: 4-phase contrast enhanced abdominal CT or gadolinium enhanced abdominal MRI
- Renal tumors (benign and malignant): Contrast enhanced CT or MRI
- Lung tumors: Non-contrast CT
- Fibroids: Contrast enhanced MRI of the pelvis
- Peripheral Arterial disease: Screening: Documented ABI and PVR recording, established disease MRA/CTA of the lower extremities
- Carotid artery disease: Screening: Duplex Ultrasound with doppler of the carotids, established disease MRI/MRA of the neck and the brain
- Renovascular hypertension: MRA of the abdomen/renal arteries
