S&T hosts and participates in technology demonstrations and events throughout the year to engage stakeholders, seek research partners and communicate with the public about new technologies and research initiatives to help security officials protect the homeland.

DHS S&T Announces Prize Competition-Seeks Innovative Ideas for Tracking First Responders Indoors, Contestant Submission Dates: March 3-April 2, 2015.
The DHS S&T First Responders Group is sponsoring the Department’s first crowdsourced prize competition under the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Reauthorization Act of 2010 (The America COMPETES Act) in support of the nation’s first responder community.  S&T’s “Indoor Tracking of the Next Generation First Responder” prize competition seeks innovative ideas for solving the challenges of real-time, robust indoor tracking of first responders. S&T is looking for solutions that will help answer the basic questions, “Where am I?” and “Where is my Team?” Proposed solutions should be personalized, modular and scalable, as well as employ current and emerging technologies, sensors and techniques. Winning solutions could receive a first place award of $20,000 or a second place award of $5,000. Register online at: Challenge.Gov

Apex Air Entry/Exit Re-engineering Webinar, April 9, 2015
The Apex Air Entry/Exit Re-engineering (AEER) Program will host a webinar for biometric solution providers and industry representatives on Thursday, April 9 at 1 PM EST. The session will cover a range of technical topics including biometric exit and improving the international arrivals process at air ports of entry, provide S&T a chance to brief the vendor community on progress thus far, solicit input from private industry, and include a Q&A. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Symposium on Technologies for Homeland Security, April 14 - 16, 2015  Waltham, MA
Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Reginald Brothers will serve as a plenary speaker at the event.This international symposium is focused on addressing the challenges of homeland security and gaps in technology innovation. Advanced X-ray Systems Development Industry Day, April 28-29 William J. Cohen Building, 330 C St. SW, Washington, DC
This two-day event will provide research results from the recently sponsored Advanced X-Ray Material Discrimination Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) 13-05 and the applicability to future development of screening equipment with enhanced explosives detection ability for checked baggage and checkpoint screening.  The event will consist of presentations and poster sessions from sponsored research performers.  The industry day will provide updated project and technology overviews from the March 2013 BAA 13-05, including mathematical foundations, algorithms, architectures, and hardware, as well as experimental results and future project plans related to DHS S&T sponsored research.  Register online today! 

2015 Cyber Security Division | Transition to Practice Technology Demonstration Day for Investors, Integrators, and IT Companies (I3) West, Spring 2015 – Silicon Valley, CA.
The Transition to Practice (TTP) program focuses on moving promising cybersecurity technologies that were developed in federal laboratories into the private sector for further development into commercially viable products with potential for widespread distribution in the marketplace. This TTP event showcases nine innovative cybersecurity technologies developed by the Department of Energy and Department of Defense laboratories that have the potential to significantly strengthen an organization’s cybersecurity posture. Hear directly about these new technologies from the research teams that produced them. Join discussions with technology investors from private industry on piloting the technologies and other areas of interest for driving further cybersecurity research.

2015 Cyber Security Division Transition to Practice Financial Sector Technology Demonstration Day, Spring 2015 – New York City, NY
This event will feature nine innovative cybersecurity technologies that have been developed at the Department of Energy and Department of Defense laboratories. During this event, cybersecurity professionals from the financial sector will learn about these new technologies through presentations, demonstrations, and discussions with the research teams that produced these technologies. In addition, attendees may discuss opportunities for piloting the technologies and areas of interest to drive further cybersecurity research.

Capacity Building Webinar on Communicating with International Partners During Emergencies – March 12, 2015 (Learn More & Register | Add to Calendar)
S&T’s First Responders Group and the National Information Sharing Consortium will host the latest installment of the Capacity Building Webinar Series featuring presenters from the Defence Research and Development Canada Centre for Security Science, Texas A&M University, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Fire and Emergency Services Authority. This webinar will highlight best practices and lessons learned on how to effectively communicate with international partners during emergencies. Topics covered will include mutual aid, social media for emergency management, LTE voice and data communications, and alerts, notifications and warnings.

Maritime Cyber Security Seminar, March 2-3, 2015
Hosted by the DHS Center of Excellence Center for Visualization and Data Analytics (CVADA), this seminar will look at evolving cyber threats in the maritime environment and countermeasures to address them. Presentation topics include uncertainty in maritime cyber security reality, vulnerabilities, mitigation, resilience, threats, risks to maritime transportation, and many others.

Capacity Building Webinar on Tools and Technologies for Responding to Power Outage Emergencies – February 26, 2015

S&T’s First Responders Group and the National Information Sharing Consortium will host the latest installment of the Capacity Building Webinar Series featuring presenters from Arlington County’s Office of Emergency Management, the Electric Infrastructure Security Council, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and S&T’s Resilient Systems Division. This webinar will highlight best practices and lessons learned to address technological challenges and strategies to build resilient power systems and monitor gas shortages.

January 27 - FRG’s System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Response (SAVER) Program Manager Brian Warner will host the first in a series of Webinars featuring General Services Administration’s (GSA) Disaster Purchasing Program for First Responders. Also presenting will be Tricia Scaglione of GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule Program Office. The purpose of the webinars will be to educate participants on how the Program allows state and local governments access to purchase from all Federal Supply Schedules, when purchasing for disaster preparation, response, or major disaster recovery, as well as how SAVER reports can be leveraged to make more informed purchasing decisions. The webinar is free to join and open to the public, but intended for First Responders. At the end, participants will receive information on how and where to access GSA’s State and Local Disaster Purchasing Program, including ordering guidelines and mandatory order language. Collaborate 2015 The Innovator's Conference - January 23 - Washington, DC - The nation's leading entrepreneurs and innovators will gather for two days of engaging conversations, and hands on learning. This event is where Innovators in Entrepreneurship, Government, and Technology converge to discuss new ideas and skills, and build new relationships. Dr. Robert Griffin will be presenting a keynote at the conference.

From December 10 - 12, Science and Technology Directorate Cyber Security Division (CSD) Program Manager Dan Massey will participate at the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC). On December 10, Massey will participate in a panel discussion “Cybersecurity and Cyber-Physical Systems: A Government Perspective,” from 10:30 to noon. On December 11, Massey will participate in a combined speech with David Balenson and Ulf Linquist from SRI on “DHS Programs: Cybersecurity for Government Vehicles,” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. On December 12, CSD Deputy Director Scott Tousley will participate in a panel discussion “Aviation Cyber Security R&D: What might be done?” from 10:30 to noon. On December 15, Science and Technology Directorate Cyber Security Division Program Manager Ann Cox will give a presentation “A Science of System Security” at the 2014 IEEE 53rd Annual Conference on Decision and Control. The annual conference is recognized as the premier scientific and engineering conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control. Hosted by the IEEE Control Systems Society in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the Japanese Society for Instrument and Control Engineers and the European Control Association, this annual event brings together an international community of researchers and practitioners in the field of automatic control to discuss new research results, perspectives on future developments and innovative applications relevant to decision making, automatic control and related areas. 2014 Cyber Security Division R&D Showcase and Technical Workshop December 16 - 18, 2014 Washington, DC
The R&D Showcase will feature 11 innovative technologies selected from S&T’s Cyber Security Division portfolio that address today’s complex cybersecurity challenges and have the potential for transition into the marketplace. The two-day Technical Workshop will feature CSD Principal Investigators presenting their research and technologies to researchers and cybersecurity leadership, allowing for collaboration and knowledge sharing, improvement of existing deployed technologies and the transition of innovative research to safeguard cyberspace. Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Reginald Brothers will present a keynote speech at the S&T-hosted event.

On December 11, Science and Technology Directorate First Responders Group Program Manager Kathleen Higgins will host the first in a series of webinars featuring General Services Administration’s (GSA) Disaster Purchasing Program for First Responders. The purpose of this webinar is to educate participants about the Disaster Purchasing Program and how it provides state and local governments’ access to Federal Supply Schedules for purchases related to disaster preparation, response or major disaster recovery. The webinar will also touch on how System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Response reports can be leveraged to ensure more informed purchasing decisions by responders. S&T Borders and Maritime

On December 10, Science and Technology Directorate Borders and Maritime Security Division Program Manager Marilyn Rudzinsky will participate in a panel discussion “Sense and Avoid Science and Research” at the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Technical Analysis and Applications Center (TAAC) Conference. Topics for discussion will include sense and avoid technologies and applications, UAS integration in the National Air Space and the changing threat environment. Each year, TAAC brings together federal agencies (Department of Defense, National Air and Space Administration, Department of Homeland Security, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Geological Survey), aviation user groups, universities and private industry to discuss UAS issues. S&T’s First Responders Group and the Chemical-Biological Defense (CBD) Division will host the latest installment of the Capacity Building Webinar Series featuring presenters from the CBD’s Biodefense Knowledge Center, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, the National Association of Sara Title III Program Officials, the Department of Health and Human Services, and First Responder Support Tools division at Applied Research Associates, Inc. This webinar will highlight tools and technologies first responders and emergency management officials can use to plan for and respond to hazardous materials incidents.
