Coterm

Coterminal application requirements

Stanford undergraduates who wish to continue their studies for the Master of Science degree in the coterminal program must have earned a minimum of 120 units towards graduation. This includes allowable Advanced Placement (AP) and transfer credit.

Applicants must submit their application no later than the quarter prior to the expected completion of their undergraduate degree. This is normally Winter Quarter (late January) prior to Spring Quarter graduation. The application must provide evidence of potential for strong academic performance as a graduate student. The Mechanical Engineering department graduate admissions committee makes decisions on each application.

Criteria for admission include: (1) outstanding performance in engineering, science and math courses (typically, an "A" average is expected), (2) demonstrated engagement in mechanical engineering or other technical fields through work experience, research projects, and/or elective courses, and (3) a commitment to pursuing graduate study in mechanical engineering as part of a larger career and educational plan.

Applicants must have completed at least two courses of: ME 80, 112, 131A and 131B, and have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) before action is taken on the application. Coterminal information, applications deadlines and forms can be obtained from the ME Student Services Office. The 2015-16 Co-Term Application can also be downloaded.

For University coterminal degree program rules and University application forms, visit the coterm section of the Registar's website.

New coterm students should be sure that all paperwork is completed in a timely fashion to ensure the appropriate transfer of undergraduate coursework towards the MS program. More information is on the University Registrar's website.
