There are multiple structured educational opportunities which include the following:

Hematology Didactic Lectures

Formal lectures on hematologic diseases and additional aspects of the care of patients with hematologic diseases are presented weekly. Lecturers include faculty from the Division of Hematology, Departments of Pathology, Radiology, Surgery, and Medicine as well as visiting speakers.

Hematology Journal Club

Fellows and faculty members present and review journal articles relevant to clinical hematology and/or basic science. This journal club meets weekly.

Hematology Clinical Conference

At this weekly conference faculty and fellows present interesting and challenging new patients and follow-up cases. A discussion of clinical management follows each presentation.

Fellows' Forum

This monthly conference covers a variety of subjects in an informal setting. The fellows assist in selecting topics and planning the conference.

Oncology Didactic Lectures

The clinical activities of the program take place in this weekly conference, which consists of formal lectures on the biology of cancer, principles of therapy, and the foundations of clinical research. Lecturers include faculty from Medical Oncology, Therapeutic Radiation, Radiology, Surgery, and Medicine as well as visiting lecturers.   Videos of the lectures are available; for access, go to Oncology Online.

Oncology Journal Club

Fellows and faculty meet weekly to present and critically review recent journal articles from the clinical and scientific literature.

Oncology Clinical Conference

This weekly conference focuses on the management of challenging new patients with cases presented in an informal manner by faculty and fellows.

Seminars on the Psychological Dimensions of Cancer Care

A psychiatrist meets weekly with the nursing staff, social workers, fellows, and faculty to discuss psychosocial aspects of caring for cancer patients, problems which the patients may present, and issues facing caregivers. Specific topics are guided by fellowsÂ’ current clinical experiences.

Research Group Meetings

Faculty research groups meet weekly to discuss work in progress. Some research groups have additional journal clubs. There are monthly meetings of the Lymphoma Program Project, Blood and Marrow Transplant Program Project groups, and the Clinical Trials group, which include faculty from many departments throughout the Medical School.

Department of Medicine Conferences

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Division holds twice-weekly lectures. Medical Grand Rounds is held weekly.

Molecular and Cellular Biology of Cancer

This course covers three major areas: cancer cell and molecular biology, carcinogenesis, and fundamental principles of therapy. Fellows may audit these graduate-level courses.

Post-Graduate Medical Education Course: PRECEPT

A curriculum is offered on topics such as principles of research in biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical trial design and ethics, and the responsible conduct of research for the clinical postdoctoral trainee. One of eight major topics is offered each quarter, and the total curriculum will be covered in eight quarters. Lectures and small discussion groups meet weekly. Information is available on the Internet for PRECEPT. The ethics course, offered each winter quarter, is required for all fellows.
