Embryonic stem cells must balance the ability to quickly become more specialized cell types with the cellular chaos that could occur should they act too early. Researchers at the School of Medicine, led by Joanna Wysocka, have identified a critical component of this delicate balancing act.

Robert R. Augsburger, former vice president of business and finance at Stanford and the first executive director of The Peninsula Open Space Trust, died on Dec. 31, at his home in Portola Valley. He was 83. Augsburger also was active with the Stanford Historical Society.
