Solar-powered irrigation improves diet, income in Africa

Sun-powered drip irrigation systems could help farmers in rural Africa escape persistent poverty and malnutrition, say researchers from the Program on Food Security and the Environment. Their study is scheduled for publication this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Anti-inflammatory drug could help prevent skin cancers

A widely available anti-inflammatory prescription drug can reduce the risk of a common skin cancer in humans, according to Jean Tang, assistant professor of dermatology at the School of Medicine and lead author of the research, published in Cancer Prevention Research Jan. 5.

The Native American Cultural Center helps American Indian students thrive academically, culturally and socially by providing a sense of community. As a result, enrollment and graduation rates for Native students are higher at Stanford than the national average.

  • Nuclear Security Fellowships at CISAC: Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) is participating in a fellowship program aimed at postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty studying issues related to nuclear security. Doctoral students may be considered. The first fellows, who will be mentored by CISAC faculty, will start in fall 2010. The application deadline is Feb. 1.
