Bob Patterson arrived on the Farm in September after spending a year and a half as deputy director of undergraduate admissions at Berkeley. "I came from an institution across the bay. I can't say the name, because I don't want anything thrown at me," he joked recently.

John Tinker, a lecturer in Stanford's Program in Writing and Rhetoric, died on Nov. 4 at his home in San Francisco. He was a co-founder of the Hume Writing Center and served as its assistant director between 2004 and 2007. He also taught classes in conjunction with the Cantor Arts Center.

The TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy at Stanford is awarding $1.2 million to university researchers to create a greener, more efficient system for delivering electricity through "smart power grid" systems. The four grants are the first to be awarded by the center.

For every two people who donate blood Nov. 22-24, the Stanford Blood Center will make a monetary donation in their honor to provide a homeless person with a bed for a night.
