Opal offers lasting remedy for uranium contamination

Researchers are proposing to use opal to sequester uranium at contaminated sites. The idea springs from natural deposits of opal, containing uranium, that have been stable for hundreds of thousands or even millions of years.

Hennessy wins engineering institute's highest honor

President John Hennessy will receive the 2012 IEEE Medal of Honor, the technical society's highest award, given for an extraordinary career or an exceptional contribution in the society's fields of interest.

 

Update on gas pipeline testing near campus

As part of its testing of gas transmission pipelines, PG&E found problems with two sections of pipe, one near campus and one near I-280 in Woodside. Repairs to those sections have been made and the sections have been returned to service. However, they will operate at reduced pressure during the winter heating season.

  • Robbery crime alert: The Stanford police are investigating a robbery at Quillen Courtyard in Escondido Village that was reported during the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 29. Anyone with information about this incident should call the Department of Public Safety's tipline at (650) 725-2139. A sketch of one of the alleged suspects is available on the SUDPS website.
