So many Directors' Cups, so little space to show them off

The good news is that Stanford recently won its 18th straight Directors' Cup, which recognizes the best collegiate sports program in the nation. The bad news is that there isn't any place to put the new 2-foot-tall, solid-crystal trophy. But it's a nice problem to have.

Its name signifies a structure that has not only become a Stanford icon, but also has become shorthand for the lands surrounding it. Like a lighthouse, the Dish beckons hundreds of thousands of people to a place that offers recreation, renewal and refreshment.

  • Memorial service planned for Heinz Furthmayr: A service will take place on campus July 26 for Heinz Furthmayr, an emeritus professor of pathology who died May 1 while hiking in Nepal. The service will begin at 4 p.m. in Memorial Church and is open to all those who would like to attend. Visit the Medical School's news website for more details.
