1) More than 2,034 bicyclists and 133 walkers participate in Bike to Work Day

Take Stanford’s Bike Safety Pledge by May 31 to enter a drawing for a new bike

Stanford reached its highest participation to date in the Bay Area’s 20th annual Bike to Work Day on May 8. Stanford’s bicycle program recorded 2,034 bicycle commuters and 133 walkers coming onto campus. Bicyclists logged a total of 8,783 miles and averaged nearly 11 miles per trip. By biking instead of driving, these commuters eliminated an estimated 7,958* pounds of CO2 emissions on Bike to Work Day.

Riders and walkers picked up snacks and a Bike to Work Day bag at one of a dozen Stanford Energizer Stations, which were co-hosted by Stanford University, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and SLAC. Walk commuters entered a drawing for walking gift certificates, while riders who logged their mileage or took the Bike Safety Pledge were entered into a drawing to win a free bicycle. To date this month, more than 435 Stanford bicyclists have pledged to wear their helmets for every ride and follow the rules of the road. Over 2,000 bicyclists have taken the bike safety pledge since the pledge started in 2010.

Stanford affiliates who take Stanford’s Bike Safety Pledge or renew an existing pledge during May, National Bike Month, will be entered into a drawing to win a free Breezer Downtown EX bicycle. The deadline to pledge is May 31. Parking & Transportation Services will draw prize winners from Bike to Work Day and the bike safety pledge entries on June 9.

Stanford’s Bicycle Program encourages all riders to bike safely, wear a helmet for every ride, and follow the rules of the road. For bike questions and assistance, please send an email to bike-information@stanford.edu.

* The per-mile emissions factor used for automobiles is 0.411 kg CO2/mile (or 0.906 lb. CO2/mile). This is based upon an average passenger vehicle fuel economy of 21.4 mpg (2011) figure from U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics).

2) Memorial Day parking enforcement and transit service

Most transit will operate on Sunday schedules; on-campus parking enforcement will be limited

Marguerite and other transit service: Marguerite service, including Ardenwood Express, will be suspended on Monday, May 26, except the following lines.

Operating Monday, May 26:

The AC Transit Line U, Dumbarton Express, and ACE Rail will not operate on May 26. The following transit agencies will operate on Sunday schedules:

Limited parking enforcement: During the Memorial Day holiday, May 26, unless otherwise posted, parking permit enforcement will be suspended in all "C" parking lots (including shared commuter/residential lots), most visitor spaces, and in most "A" lots, with the exception of parking facilities serving the hospital and School of Medicine. "A" parking spaces, visitor spaces, Service/University Vehicle spaces, and timed loading zones/spaces will be enforced during the holiday as follows.

These parking areas will be enforced on Memorial Day:

Parking restrictions in residential lots (except shared lots) and special zones, such as disabled parking, red zones, fire lanes, and ‘Special Permit Only’ spaces will be enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please refer to our Parking and Circulation Map (PDF) for parking locations and designations.

P&TS will be closed on Monday, May 26, for the Memorial Day holiday. If you have questions, please contact us before 5 p.m. on May 23 or contact the appropriate transit agency directly.

3) Summer is a great time to try a sustainable commute

Join the Commute Club by June 2 to enter prize drawings; current members are automatically entered

As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, summer is a great time to try a sustainable commute. Calculate the calories you could burn per minute biking (PDF) or walking (PDF) to work or transit.

We can help! Request a free transit and/or bicycle commute plan with our do-it-yourself or custom commute planning service. You also could find a Stanford affiliate with whom to carpool or vanpool through our free ridematching service.

If you return a long-term (annual or academic year) permit, you could be eligible to receive up to $100 in our permit-return promotion. This bonus incentive is in addition to the Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit you would receive as a Commute Club member. Plus, you could still purchase up to eight daily parking permits per month for days you need to drive.

If you join by June 2, you could win a vacation getaway, a $1,000 shopping spree, or an iPad Air in our 2014 Commute Club Spring Promotion!

Current Commute Club members are automatically entered into prize drawings. Visit My Commute Club to check on membership status.

If you have questions or need assistance, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu or call 650.736.9923.

4) Stanford adds two Zipcars at a new location at Hoover Pavilion

Set up a free Zipcar department membership for work-related vehicle needs

Two new Zipcars—a Ford Escape 4WD and Volkswagen Jetta—have been added at the Hoover Pavilion Parking Lot adjacent to Palo Road. The parking spaces are near the fountain, northeast of Hoover Pavilion. With these additions, Stanford now has 66 Zipcars at 26 locations.

Zipcar provides free and discounted membership and bonus credits, including the following:

Zipcar at Stanford provides a self-service, on-demand car sharing program for faculty and staff and for Stanford students, ages 18 and over. Access Zipcars 24/7. Rates start at $7.50 per hour, including gas and insurance. Visit the Stanford page on the Zipcar site to learn more or join Zipcar today.

Whenever possible, all Stanford affiliates, including those driving Zipcars, are encouraged to avoid departing campus during the peak commute times. Peak times to avoid include departures from campus between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the university being faced with costly mitigation measures.
