Under limited direction, assist with the Museum’s programs of collection, acquisition and conservation, exhibitions, education and publication. The Curatorial Assistant/Associate reports to the Associate Director for Exhibitions, Collections, and Curatorial Affairs and works on projects for other curators as assigned. He/She is responsible for assisting in all aspects of collections and exhibitions development. The curatorial assistant/associate will provide support for the organization of original and loan exhibitions; the maintenance and development of the permanent collection, including record keeping; and the management of departmental activities including research, programs, education, public affairs, and development.

Development Manager 1: Cantor Associate Director and Director of External Relations
Job Requisition Number: 67309
Lead development, efforts and execution of fundraising goals and activities for the Cantor Arts Center. This position reports directly to the Cantor’s Director with a dotted line to the Senior Director of Development, Arts Program in the Office of Development. The Associate Director serves on the Cantor Senior Management team and leads the development efforts and execution of its fundraising goals and activities. The scope of the fundraising responsibilities includes all priorities of the Cantor as well as serving as a liaison to the broader arts fundraising efforts on campus. At the Cantor, the scope ranges from principal and major gifts, acquisitions, stewardship, bequest intentions as well as the joint membership of the Cantor/Anderson Collection. Annual commitments to the Cantor are in the $13M-$15M range with over 2,500 members providing support in excess of $1M.

CORE DUTIES*:
• Direct efforts of the Cantor External Relations team. This team currently includes two event planners, a membership manager, two project managers and a term position as a membership assistant. This team manages nearly 100 events each year.
• Plan and implement the fund-raising program for the Cantor Arts Center.
• Work with volunteers and leaders to develop goals and fundraising activities.
• Provide opportunities for professional growth focusing on retention to increase capacity and stability of the team.
• Inspire and motivate staff by fostering a work environment that encourages new ideas, risk-taking, team-based efforts, celebrating current achievements and setting/meeting philanthropic goals.
• Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees
• Ensure appropriate resources are allocated towards programs, resolve internal allocation issues.
CORE DUTIES SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION MAY INCLUDE:
• Provide strategy, leadership and direction, including creating a strategy to sustain the momentum and growth of the joint membership program (Cantor/Anderson Collection) established in 2014, building on a 50 year membership program at the Cantor.
• Commitment to the advancement of the arts.
• Submit annual goals to the Cantor Director, School of Humanities and Sciences, and the Office of Development for the fund-raising programs for the museum: membership, annual gifts, stewardship, principal and major gifts.

Position Title: Education Programs Student Assistant

Preference given to sophomores or juniors

Under the supervision of the Education Programs Associate, the intern will assist with event coordination, PR, website management, administrative tasks, and special projects as needed. The student should have excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, ability to pick up computer skills quickly, and experience in an office or administrative setting. Interest in working in museum education and/or event planning is a plus. The student should be self-motivated, creative, and highly organized. Responsibilities include: Corresponding with our 75-member docent volunteer body, coordinating logistics for public programs, managing our internal department calendar and online event listings, reporting metrics on audience engagement, and designing print collateral for events.

Position Title: Outdoor Sculpture Maintenance Technician
The technician will work with the current sculpture maintenance crew and objects conservator for training and on large projects. May be required to interact with university staff and contractors to obtain services and assistance (fencing, water, power, lifts, and other equipment as necessary), to review Facilities Operations Construction Updates in order to anticipate projects and events that might have an adverse effect on the outdoor collection. In addition, responsibilities will involve washing and general maintenance of the outdoor sculpture collection. Technicians must be prepared to answer questions regarding the museum, sculpture, and working with the sculpture. May be photographed by The Daily and other papers and perhaps quoted. The position requires a minimum of 5 hours per week during the school year, and more in the summer.

Position Title: PR Student Assistant 
The PR Student Assistant will assist in planning publicity campaigns geared towards Stanford students and the community; distribute information about the Cantor and its programs through a variety of forms including email, online, and printed materials around campus; work on outreach to student groups; keep online listings up-to-date and seek out new listing opportunities; write and submit notices for student publications; organize and file PR materials as needed. Student should have a good working knowledge of the Stanford campus and its environs, proficiency with Word and Photoshop desired, excellent written and oral communication skills, work well with others, able to work on an individual basis, and be self-motivated. Preferred: applicants interested in the arts, photography, and / or public relations/marketing.

Position Title: Registration Assistant for Imaging and Copyright

Under the direction and supervision of the Cantor’s Associate Registrar, the Registration Assistant for Imaging and Copyright will assist with clearing rights for using images of the Cantor’s collection in publications (75% of position) and organizing the Cantor’s image files (25% of position). The student in this position will work with the Cantor’s Embark collections management database, will be trained in the basics of copyright, and will become familiar with the day-to-day responsibilities of a museum registrar. Must have proficiency with word processing software, have excellent writing skills, be detail oriented, able to work on an individual basis, and be self-motivated. Preferred: applicants interested in the arts, art history, museum studies, or information and library sciences. The length of the position is negotiable but a minimum 4 month commitment is required.

Position Title: Social Media Assistant

Working in the education department, the assistant will help manage the social media presence for the museum, creating posts for Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram. The student will work with the collections database to unearth objects from storage and bring them to life digitally, conducting basic research on artists in the collection, specific artworks, regions, and art movements to the extent that is necessary to write accurately about the art. Applicants should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be self-motivated and detail-oriented. Individuals interested in visual culture and writing are especially encouraged to apply.

Position Title: Family Sunday Ambassadors
Applications accepted on rolling basis.

The Cantor Arts Center is hiring twelve Family Sunday Ambassadors to work during the highly popular Family Sunday program in the summer. Candidates should be highly motivated, reliable individuals who demonstrate interest in art or museum work, take initiative, exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills, and enjoy working with families and young children. Ambassadors are expected to work on average two Sundays per month for at least six months; excellent attendance is a must. Hours are 12:15 to 3:30 pm. Studio Assistants work with a professional art educator to present unique studio art-making experiences each week. Responsibilities include explaining the lesson, elements of art, and techniques to families, maintaining art supplies, preparing materials, assisting the art educator as needed, and managing setup and cleanup of the studio.

 

Welcome Table Assistants are the first point of contact for Family Sunday visitors. In addition to informing families about Family Sunday activities, they ensure the smooth flow of visitors. Responsibilities include greeting family visitors, providing families with information about the day's tour and art project, managing tour and art-making sign-ups, tracking metrics, and helping guide families in and out of the art-making studio.

 

Art Pack Assistants manage the organization and distribution of Art Packs, which contain materials for visitors to use independently in the museum. Responsibilities include signing out Art Packs, explaining museum guidelines, maintaining the quality of the materials, circulating throughout the galleries to engage families in thoughtful drawing experiences.

 

Tour Assistants help docents lead tour groups by tracking the time and number of participants, recording notes and comments, managing group dynamics, and helping families move through the galleries. Family Sundays offer four half-hour tours; after the final tour, tour assistants will use their remaining time to assist with studio art-making or art pack duties.
