Europe and America

Two large galleries are devoted to European and American Art before 1900. Wares from Cyprus, red- and black-figure vessels from ancient Greece, and Roman sculpture are featured in the northern gallery together with European paintings and sculpture dating from about 1500 to 1800. Roughly divided into British, Dutch, French, and Italian areas, the display includes Joseph Wright of Derby’s Portrait of Edward Becher Leacroft of Wirksworth, Cornelis van Dalem’s panoramic Landscape with Adam and Eve, Abraham van Beyren’s Still Life with Crab, François-André Vincent’s Zeuxis Choosing His Models from Among the Maidens of Croton, and Bartolomeo Guidobono’s intriguing Sorceress.

The Robert Mondavi Family Gallery is devoted to the 19th century and includes monumental California landscapes such as William Keith’s Sunset on Mt. Diablo, as well as Thomas Eakin’s Portrait of Professor William D. Marks and James Tissot’s Promenade on the Ramparts. Eugène Emile Hébert’s conniving Mephistopheles and Henri Chapu’s suave allegory Youth are among the sculptures that complement the Center’s Rodin collection. In addition, an array of small paintings is displayed in a semblance of a 19th-century collector’s cabinet.

Both galleries include areas devoted to works on paper. In each, thematic displays are selected from the Center’s collection of prints, drawings, and photographs. These mini-shows—each including about 20 works—are changed two to three times per year.
