Stanford Human Rights Center
The Stanford Human Rights Center provides tools for students, advocates, states, and civil society to better understand how to respect and protect human rights.
The Center was created in 2013 to conduct applied human rights research. We promote events, student engagement, and public understanding of international human rights and global justice.
Our work focuses on public policy analysis in the areas of criminal justice reform, conditions of detention, and developing incentives for states and corporations to respect human rights. Although our main area of focus for this work is Latin America, our work on corporate accountability has taken us across the globe.
Projects
We support the production of scholarship and projects in a number of areas.
We also conduct policy research on human rights in the Americas, Business and Human Rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights in the context of extractive industries, and barriers to the implementation of human rights respecting regimes.
Our work includes the creation of education materials on international human rights, including a MOOC produced in partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning. Some of our work is carried out through a Policy Lab, an innovative Stanford Law School experiential learning opportunity. See policy lab practicum
We are also conducting research on prison reform in the Americas and completing a casebook on the inter-American human rights system.
