Stem Cell Building Opens

ART AND SCIENCE: The lobby's centerpiece is Dale Chihuly's massive (two-ton) yet delicate chandelier.

Described as a "research thoroughbred," the new Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building is flush with leading-edge technology and support resources, including the latest in genome sequencing machinery and a cancer tissue bank capable of rapid analysis. Opened in October, the 200,000-square-foot building is a short walk from the School of Medicine along Campus Drive; it houses the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.

There are about 550 occupants, including more than 45 faculty, working on a broad range of projects in 33 laboratories. Financed without any federal funds, the construction was underpinned by a $75 million gift from Silicon Valley philanthropist Lorry Lokey, '49, and $43.6 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
