WATER-POLO COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Three straight Stanford goals cut USC's lead to 10-9, but that's where the women's National Collegiate Championship water polo final ended, with the top-seeded Cardinal finishing second for the fifth time in the event's 10-year history. The game took place at San Diego State's Aztec Aquaplex.

Stanford, which won its only national title in 2002, wrapped up with a 26-3 overall record and a 7-0 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

LACROSSE TEAM REACHES NCAA TOURNEY

The women's lacrosse team made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2006 but lost a first-round squeaker, 9-8, to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. Stanford finished the season with a program-best 15 wins and 6 losses, reaching the tourney with a play-in game victory at home over the University of Massachusetts.

Stanford was ranked 15th in the country when it confronted James Madison, but season highlights included time at No. 8 nationally and the defeat of three ranked teams (Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Hofstra).

WOMEN ROWERS SETTLE FOR FOURTH

Defending national team titleholder Stanford ended up fourth in the NCAA women's rowing championships after a fifth-place finish by the varsity eight, last year's gold-medal winner, in the concluding race at Sacramento State Aquatic Center. Virginia earned the team title with 87 points, followed by Cal (82), Princeton (76) and the Cardinal (75). Stanford's second eight took the silver.
