HENNESSY CALLS FOR REVISIONS IN TECH CONTROLS

University President John Hennessy urged Congress to restructure export control rules during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee held in January at the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center. Hennessy said that longstanding rules limiting the sharing of information that could threaten national security need to be rewritten to avoid impeding breakthrough research in science and technology. Examples at Stanford included a project hindered by a restriction on the participation of students from China and vaccine work that was stopped because of burdensome security regulations.

APPLICATIONS INCREASE AGAIN

Applications for the next undergraduate class exceeded 32,000, a 5.6 percent increase over last year's record high of 30,348. Including the candidates admitted through the Restrictive Early Action Program, 2,300 applicants were offered admission last year—a record-low acceptance rate of 7.6 percent. Applicants will be notified of decisions April 1. In mid-December, acceptance letters were sent to 753 of the 5,566 students applying under early action.
