The Clayman Institute for Gender Research

Terry Berlier is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily with sculpture, installation, and video. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally, including the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, the Institute for Contemporary Art in San Jose and the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento. She has received fellowships and residencies at Recology San Francisco, Kala Art Institute, Hungarian Multicultural Center, Millay Colony for Artists and Visions from the New California Residency at the Exploratorium. She has received grants from the Zellerbach Foundation Berkeley, Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Fellowship, Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research Fellow, California Council for Humanities California Stories Fund, City of Cincinnati Individual Artist Grant, and the City of Davis Art Contract. She received a Masters of Fine Arts in Studio Art from University of California, Davis. She currently teaches in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University.

For her fellowship, Berlier will make a series of time-based devices (sculptures and installations) that explore gender issues around the Clayman Institute’s theme, “Beyond the Stalled Revolution.” Berlier will explore this theme by using the metaphors of time/speed and incorporating her exploration of time-based mediums (kinetics, sound, video and interaction). The central concepts of Berlier’s work include the environment, place, everyday objects and queer practice. Sculptural possibilities and research include a series of clock mechanisms where time, place, history and culture would be metaphorically depicted through visual devices conveying barriers, breakthroughs, setbacks and advancements in gender equality.
