In the past decade, international assessments and rankings have received great public attention. They also have encouraged policy makers to adopt an international perspective and look for reform strategies from successful education systems. The question arises as to what extent transnational policy borrowing can be used to develop local educational reforms.

The seminar Global and local aspects of teacher preparation: what can Brazil learn from international teacher education programs? will discuss the potentials and limitations of adopting foreign approaches to teacher  education in the Brazilian context. The event will be coordinated by Dr. Rachel Lotan, director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program, an internationally-recognized leader in the field of teacher preparation. The webinar will also have other two guest speakers. Dr. Cristián Cox, dean of the School of Education at the Universidad Católica de Chile, will talk about the Chilean experience in applying elements of international teacher education programs to its domestic context. Dr. Zena Eisenberg, coordinator of the Teacher Education program of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, will discuss how Brazil can learn from outside models of teacher preparation, and what should be the main concerns of Brazilian teacher educators while implementing overarching principles of powerful teacher-education from around the world.

This event, held on April 4, is part of four workshops sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies and the Lemann Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Brazilian Education, both at Stanford University.
