As an interdisciplinary, teaching, research, and outreach center, CLAS serves as a major national resource for the study of the latin american region. CLAS’s educational outreach activities enhance the internationalization of K-12 and higher education through (1) professional and curriculum development programs for K-12 and community college instructors, (2) the professionalization of Spanish and less commonly taught languages instruction in the K-12 and higher education curriculum, (3) public conferences and programs, and (4) Latin American Studies instruction for students in underrepresented community schools. CLAS partners with the Graduate School of Education’s Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET), the Stanford Program on International and Cross Cultural Education (SPICE), SGS area centers, and local high schools and community organizations such as Puente de la Costa Sur of San Mateo County’s south coast. In addition, CLAS supports several international film festivals, including the SGS Summer Film Festival and the United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF), and the Américas Book Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.

CLAS is a U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center (NRC). Supported by the U.S. Department of Education under the auspices of Title VI, Section 602(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965, NRCs serve to strengthen access to and training in the major languages of their respective regions, and to broaden area studies training across all disciplines.
