Not only is Stanford one of the most distinguished academic centers in the country, but Stanford’s University Medical Center is one of the premier hospitals in the country.
We are committed to making this the finest Surgical Training Program in the United States. Because of the incredible scientific infrastructure here at Stanford, especially in biotechnology, we believe we can train the next generation of leaders in surgery in this country.
This website is for you, but it is about us. It is about the residents who have completed their training at Stanford and it is about the residents who are here now. It is about the contributions these two groups will make to the future of surgery and to the care of their patients as they move through their careers. It is also about you, should you come to Stanford, because you will become a part of a great history and legacy. Anita Hagan, Program Manager
Anita has been our Program Manager since 2001. She assists in the management and development of the residency program. Her tenure spans three Program Directors and over a decade of surgical residents. She was recently nationally recognized by the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery and received their 2015 Recognition Award.
Patricia Raines, Coordinator
Patricia has been a residency coordinator since 2012, her main focus is managing our duty hours. She previously worked in the School of Medicine overseeing fellowships. She is a wonderful asset to our residency program and we are lucky to have her on our team.
JoAnn Smithson, Coordinator
JoAnn has worked with our residency program since 2000; her main focus is managing our evaluation system. Her years of experience and knowledge is vital to our residency program.

Jennifer Erdrich, MD
PGY 5
Jennifer attended Stanford for college and Harvard for medical school. During her professional development years of residency she earned her MPH at Harvard School of Public Health with a concentration in cancer prevention. While there, she did research for The Nurses' Health Study, specifically calculating the population attributable risk of disease in the cohort and identifying a lifestyle index that could prevent 37% of colon cancer cases. Her interests are Native American healthcare and Surgical Oncology.
Lyen Huang, MD
PGY 5
Lyen completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Stanford University and his MPH at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Under the mentorship of Atul Gawande and Sara Singer at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, he helped implement the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in 67 hospitals in South Carolina and conducted research to understand the factors leading to successful implementation of large-scale quality and safety initiatives. He has also worked with Kim Rhoads at Stanford University to explore why minorities under-utilize high quality hospitals for cancer care. He is currently applying for a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery.
