Make a Gift

The Department of Health Research and Policy (HRP) has as its focus cutting edge medical advances in biostatistics, epidemiology, and health services research. Its faculty contribute to all manner of technology transfer and applications that bear on medical studies and on the public's health. Gifts to the Department of Health Research and Policy may be designated as either expendable or endowed. Expendable gifts may be to support students, for tuition or other educational expenses; for the support of research; or for outreach to the general community. In general, an expendable gift means that the principal is used for the purpose designated by the donor. This type of gift enables a donor to make an immediate impact. The permanence of an endowed fund, and your ability to name the fund after anyone you choose, makes this type of giving an excellent vehicle for honoring or perpetuating the memory of someone important to you.

Transferring marketable stock to Stanford in general and to HRP in particular enables you the donor to support an area of medical research while reducing your tax bill. You can receive a charitable tax deduction while avoiding any capital gains tax that otherwise apply.

Planned gifts include many possibilities with special implications for taxes, including gifts through your estate, your will or revocable trust, and life income gifts. Life income gifts allow you to transfer assets now (for example, cash, securities, and real estate) and to receive income for a period of time, with the remainder going to Stanford. By including Stanford University School of Medicine, and in particular its Department of Health Research and Policy, in your financial planning, you provide a gift that will live on, and will benefit current and future generations.
