Dr. Scott Sutherland

Dr. Scott Sutherland's research focuses on improvements to the systemic delivery of clinical Pediatric Nephrology care. Much of this work focuses on using the data in the computerized medical record to identify patients at high risk for adverse events and in so doing, prevent them. This is expected to lead to a tremendous improvement in patient outcomes.

Another area of research is techniques and protocols to improve our ability to provide a transplant to patients who are highly sensitized.  Patients who become sensitized due to previous organ transplants, blood transfusions or pregnancies must spend years on dialysis waiting for a suitable kidney transplant.  Along with Dr. Abanti Chaudhuri and colleagues, Dr. Sutherland's research is shortening the time these children must wait for a transplant and allowing us to now transplant children who were previously thought to be untransplantable.
