Bioenergy crops could lower surface temperatures

Concerns about the impact of corn ethanol on global warming have raised interest in more eco-friendly perennial grasses. Converting large swaths of farmland to perennial grasses for biofuels could lower regional surface temperatures, according to a recent Stanford study.

Successful entrepreneurs share stories of survival

In the 1980s, inflation was 12 percent and interest rates were 18 percent. That didn't stop John Paul DeJoria from hanging tough against great odds, building the once money-losing company he started with a hairdresser partner into John Paul Mitchell Systems, one of the largest independently owned hair care outfits in the United States. Recently, DeJoria and other business pioneers shared their views from the trenches during the 2011 Conference on Entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Business.

Engineering professor, inventor John G. Linvill dies at 91

John Linvill, professor emeritus of electrical engineering and inventor of the Optacon character-reading device for the blind, died Feb. 19 at age 91. A pioneer of Silicon Valley, Linvill "transistorized" the Stanford electrical engineering curriculum and helped shape an industry that shaped the world.
