Wood, pioneer on exercise, diet, improved cholesterol, dies

Peter Wood, an emeritus professor of medicine whose license plate said, "HIGH HDL," was an early expert in deciphering the effects of diet, exercise and weight on human health. His research influenced current guidelines for lessening the risk for heart disease. He died of cancer March 3 at 81.

New gene regions linked to predisposition to heart attacks

Thirteen new gene regions have been convincingly linked to coronary atherosclerosis in a massive, new, international genetics study involving investigators from the School of Medicine. Tim Assimes (left) and Thomas Quertermous were part of the international study.

When a warning is issued, the university strongly recommends against individual travel to the country and prohibits undergraduates from Stanford-sponsored or Stanford-organized trips.
