Stanford Global Studies Minor with Specialization in South Asian Studies

REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of three-unit SGS introductory course.
  • Completion of at least 25 units of qualifying courses including a 5 unit core course i.e. Anthro 149/249: South Asia: History, People, Politics. With the permission of the Director, students could take History 106A.
  • 20 units in various courses that together represent an area of interdisciplinary focus such as immigration and law; urbanization and film; history and culture and so on. Each course (with the exception of BOSP courses) must be at the 100-level or higher.  
  • At least 10 of the 25 units need to be completed at the home campus; the remaining 15 units could be completed in an approved study abroad program. 
  • Language requirement: Intermediate proficiency in a South Asian language by any one of the following means:  
    • Completion of two introductory language courses in a South Asian language (Urdu, Hindi, Persian, Bengali, Pashto, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Malayalam, Garhwali, Nepalese, Tibetan, Sindhi and others may qualify). 
    • Intermediate proficiency in any of the above languages, as measured by the ACTFL scale.  
  • A capstone experience in South Asia such as study abroad, field research, an internship, or another example of sustained and serious involvement in South Asia. The specific program must be approved by the Center for South Asia faculty director. Students will present their work in an end-of-year Capstone Seminar with other SGS minors and led by SGS faculty. How do I declare a Global Studies Minor with Specialization?

 

Students declaring a Global Studies Minor with Specialization, please:

1)    Set up an appointment with Sangeeta Mediratta. Email: smedirat [at] stanford [dot] edu for dates and times. It is mandatory that you register with the respective advisor.  

2)    Register through Axess, together with Sangeeta Mediratta, and select the Global Studies Minor.

3)    The complete and submit the Declaration or Change of Undergraduate Major, Minor, Honors, or Degree Program form to indicate which of the six specializations you are selecting. 

If you encounter any problems with declaring in AXESS, you may submit a HelpSU to the Registrar’s Office (Request Category = Central Office Issues; Request Type = Registrar).

In the long term, there will be a system enhancement to allow students to declare the Minor and Specializations entirely online.  Prior to declaring a Global Studies Minor with Specialization, it is important that you meet with faculty and staff administering the relevant specializations to review degree requirements and to determine if the Global Studies Minor is a good fit for your academic interests.
