energyCatalyst Grants

By augmenting course curriculum with experts and experiences, the TomKat Center’s energyCatalyst Grants aim to cultivate interdisciplinary thinking and introduce sustainable energy concepts and opportunities to Stanford students. 

WHO: These grants are available to faculty and academic staff for undergraduate and graduate courses in any department or school.

WHEN: We encourage applicants to submit sustainable energy-related funding requests during the quarter prior to the relevant course. However, requests can be made at any time during the year.

WHAT: Examples of successful grant applications might include taking a class on an industry or site tour; inviting an industry expert or guest researcher to give a lecture to a class; or purchasing materials for demonstrating, prototyping, or testing technology for a course project. Funding is limited to one grant per course per quarter.

Summer Internships

The TomKat Center has two internship programs. The objectives of the summer internships are for students to gain work experience, develop applied engineering knowledge, learn entrepreneurship in a start-up environment, and build upon their academic studies.

  1. TomKat Center Undergraduate Internships: The TomKat Center offers a limited number of paid summer internships to Stanford undergraduate students at Stanford-affiliated energy-startup companies.

  2. Industry-Supported Energy Internships: The TomKat Center works with several energy-startup companies to help recruit talented Stanford undergraduates and masters students for summer internships.

TomKat/StartX Prize

Compete to spend your summer advancing your  business or product innovation in sustainable energy, food, water, or the environment.

WHO: Stanford undergraduates (a team of up to four students)

WHAT:  You can win the opportunity can spend 8 weeks next summer as TomKat Innovators in Residence at StartX refining and advancing your concept. In addition to the fantastic mentorship and resources available at StartX the winning team will be eligible to receive up to $5,000 of support for expenses.  Also, individual team members (up to a maximum of 4 students) that commit their summer (fulltime for at least 8 weeks) to working on their innovation and StartX will each receive a $6,000 stipend.

Impact Fellowships

In conjunction with the Haas Center, the TomKat Center will provide stipends to Stanford undergraduate students to work on a sustainable energy project with significant social impact.

As a team, students will work at Stanford for 8 weeks over the summer to undertake an innovative project that quantifies economic opportunities and develops actionable solutions that will assist disadvantaged communities benefit from transitioning to sustainable energy, food, water, and transportation systems. 

The TomKat Center Energy Impact Summer Fellowships will begin in the summer of 2016.  Applications will be accepted during the winter 2016 quarter.
