Safety-Kleen
agrees to $15 million settlement for hundreds of violations
April 16, 2010 – In a
landmark Southern California case, national cleaning solvent
supplier Safety-Kleen has agreed to pay $15 million to
settle hundreds of air quality and unfair business practices
violations. The case was coordinated by AQMD and the
district attorney’s offices representing the counties of Los
Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino, and the Los
Angeles City Attorney’s Office. This is the largest case of
its kind in California.

establishes six-month “Permit Application Penalty Holiday”
February 11, 2010 – AQMD’s
new ‘Permit Application Penalty Holiday’ is designed to
provide businesses a temporary opportunity to obtain all
needed air quality permits without incurring late fees or
violations if they take the necessary steps to bring their
business into compliance. The program began February 5 and
will continue through August 4, 2010.

approves 2010 Lawn Mower Exchange Program
February 5, 2010 – Residents
once again can get a deep discount on a new, zero-emission,
battery electric lawnmower by trading in their old gasoline
model in AQMD’s Lawn Mower Exchange Program. This year,
9,380 zero-emission mowers will be available for exchange at
events throughout the Southland. Online registration opens
April 21 at 8 a.m. at
www.aqmd.gov.

News: Climate changes may worsen allergies, report says
April 16, 2010 – A new
report (PDF; 1.43 MB)
by the National Wildlife Federation warns that if climate
changes continue, allergies will worsen and trigger more
asthma attacks. The report indicates global warming will
have an even greater impact on asthmatics whose attacks are
triggered by allergens or smog.

Obama is challenging all Americans to take action to improve
the environment in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth
Day. To help, the White House has created a new website

News: Report: Benefits of implementing climate change
policy properly
April 15, 2010 –A new
report (PDF; 7.03 MB) by researchers from
three California universities details how reducing
greenhouse gases from facilities operating in the most
polluted neighborhoods could have significant public health
benefits. The report “Minding the Climate Gap” argues that
while the state works to reduce greenhouse gases, it should
also take into account air pollution at the local level.

News: Industry groups want
court review of new NO2 standard
April 14, 2010 – Industry groups have filed a petition with the U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals seeking the court’s review of U.S.
EPA’s new nitrogen dioxide standard. The standard was
tightened in January to a level deemed more protective of
public health and the environment. Industry groups have
expressed concerns with the new standard, including the
scientific data used.

honor
April 14, 2010 – California is seeking nominations for its annual
Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards
program. The program is open to residents, organizations,
businesses, associations and others that have demonstrated
exceptional leadership and made notable, voluntary
contributions in conserving California’s precious resources,
including protecting and enhancing our environment. Deadline
for applications is June 1 at 5:00 p.m.

News: Grants available to help save fuel, clean the air
April 13, 2010
– The Reformulated Gasoline Settlement Fund has
been established to provide about $7 million in grant
funding to nonprofit organizations for projects that will
provide fuel savings and air pollution reduction benefits to
California consumers. The deadline to submit proposals is
Monday, May 3, 2010 at 5 p.m.

California State Parks Foundation 13th Annual Earth
Day Restoration and Cleanup – April 17, 2010
The California State Parks Foundation is seeking volunteers
to help restore the state’s parks and commemorate the 40th
anniversary of Earth Day. Volunteers are needed to plant
trees and gardens, clean up trash and debris from parklands
and beaches, and help restore trails and wildlife habitats.
The 13th annual Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup will be
held on Saturday, April 17 at 25 sites across the state,
including 13 sites in Southern California. To get more

Celebrate 40 years of Earth Day at the City of Santa
Monica’s Earth Day on the Promenade, a carbon-neutral
festival where over 60 exhibitors will be on hand to provide

more. The event will be held on Saturday, April 17 from 10
a.m. to 7 p.m. on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade.
